The Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi coast is a stretch of coastline around 60km south of Naples. The start is at Sorrento and it continues through the town of Positano, Amalfi, Atrani, Maiori and Vietri sul Mare to finish up in the largest town south of Naples, Salerno. Day trips to the Amalfi Coast couldn’t be easier from Naples with both buses and trains running regularly.

Amalfi

There are a couple of museums in Amalfi, ‘Il museo della carta’, a paper museum in a 13th century paper mill and ‘Museo Civico’ containing the manuscript of the city’s ancient maritime code.  You can take a short boat trip costing around 5 euros from Amalfi to the ‘Grotta dello Smeraldo’ or the ‘Emerald Cave’.

In high season there is a ferry that takes passengers from Naples to the port of Amalfi, and there are also two SITA buses from 8:45am and 9:10am which leave from nearby the hostel.  When catching the bus to Amalfi it is recommended that you sit on the right hand side, in order to make the most of the spectacular views.

Top things to do in Amalfi:

‘Sant’Andrea’ cathedral. Described as one of the most striking cathedrals in the whole of southern Italy, this cathedral is also located on the town’s main square, the ‘Piazza del Duomo’. The cathedral dates from the early 10th century, although has been restored and added to since then.

Positano

The church of Santa Maria Assunta features a dome made of majolica tiles and a Byzantine statue of the Black Madonna, dating back to the  thirteenth-century.   Positano has some of the best views of the Amalfi coastline, but get your walking boots on as Positano is built into the cliff side and has thousand upon thousands of steep steps going up from and down to the town’s famous beach.

Sorrento

A trip to the cathedral on Corso Italia, the main street of Sorrento: it’s more impressive inside than out.  Make sure you stop off for a Gelato at Primavera, also on Corso Italia.

Take a look at the views of the coast from ‘Villa Communale Park’.

If you’re planning a trip around Easter, read up on the famous processions that take place through the town on Good Friday. The first one begins very early Good Friday morning, with participants clad in white hooded robes, with the Madonna carried aloft ‘in search of her son’. The second procession begins later in the evening, with participants now wearing black robes, in mourning for the death of Christ.

Join the tours to Amalfi Coast

There’s plenty of tours to choose to go to Amalfi Coast from Naples, but mostly are for a full day. You will get to know Sorrento, Ravello, Positano or Vietri Sul Mare by car, bus or boat. Get blown away with the marvelous landscapes of this wonderful coastline and have a taste of the typical liquor called limoncello!
