Athens Guide
Things to do in Athens
Athens is the city where Olympian gods meld with modern denizens in a mash up of art, nightlife, mouth watering food and ancient temples. This beloved birthplace of democracy and western civilization has undergone a massive evolution in the past decade, offering travellers a myriad of adventures from ancient archaeology to a thriving art scene, dance clubs and bars that stay open way beyond your mother’s prescribed bedtime.
The Sites
No trip to Athens would be complete without a visit to Acropolis. Make your way up to the Parthenon via the Dromos and the Philosopher’s Path, hitting Hadrian’s Library and the Ancient Agora on the way. You should also consider checking out the New Acropolis Museum too. This state of the art museum was built on top of an ancient village and the glass floor allows you to peer down on the fascinating remains.
If you’re lucky you can catch a summer concert at the Odeon of Herodus Atticus. Built in 161 AD, this theatre’s acoustics are still spectacular and the knowledge that the ancients gathered on the same spot over 800 years ago, only makes the experience all the more memorable.
The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is another must see site and houses one of the world’s most extensive collections of relics from the ancient world. It’s home to an amazing collection of sculpture from Greece and beyond, as well as an impressive Egyptian artefact collection. This stop is a must for those who want to see the treasures, pottery and artwork of the ancients.
For an incredible panoramic view of Athens, head up to Lykavittos Hill. If you’re in shape then brave the hike. When you reach the top, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world!
For those less inclined towards physical exertion on holiday jump into one of Athen’s very affordable cabs. When you get dropped off you only have to climb a few flights of stairs to take in this spectacular view.
AthenStyle hostel is located in the heart of Psiri, which according to many, is the true heart of Athens! This hard working neighbourhood transforms into a buzzing nightlife of bars and clubs when the sun sets, and has always been home to cutting edge music, culture and unique style.
Feel like taking in some modern art or hanging out in one of the city’s most thriving, night time hot spots at the same time? Then Head to Gazi. Hip, artsy bars abound here - playing everything from Rock to Jazz and some ambient Trance too! Here on the weekend the party doesn’t stop until the sun rises in the sky.
Looking for top end boutiques and adventure amongst the chic and wealthy residents of Athens? Then head to Kolonaki. Here the eye candy is abundant, the drinks are pricey and the ambiance makes you feel like you couldn’t possibly settle for anything but the best!
Athens has something spectacular to suit everyone’s tastes. From incredible shopping and mouth watering cuisine to a spirit of vibrancy and comfort amongst the ancient temples! You’ll experience all of this for yourself and more when you jet in and take a wander through this amazing city!
