Princes Street was built as part of the 'New Town' section of Edinburgh in the latter half of the 18th century. Today the street is a historical divide between the southern monumental Edinburgh Castle and stately Gardens and the northern shoppers delight. In true Georgian style, dominating the modern big name shops and small boutiques is all 200 feet of the Sir Walter Scott Monument, circa 1846. Visitors looking for a tremendous view of the Edinburgh skyline are invited to tackle the 287 steps for the pleasure.
