Things to do in Marseille

A busy, bustling port, though not particularly touristy, Marseille is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination. A classic French fishing city where you can watch the day’s catches come in and take a load off sat at one of the many port-side bars or restaurants.

Food and drink are a pivotal part of the Marseille lifestyle and you’ll find plenty of places to savour the local delicacies like the popular fish stew Bouillabaisse. Be it local hotspots like Les Parts des Agnes, the interesting and affordable Le Café des Epices or Michelin starred favourites like Le Petit Nice, they all come highly recommended for fresh seafood, cured meats or just a few glasses of fine French wine. A multicultural city with a large immigrant population Marseille can also easily cater for lovers of Caribbean, North African and Italian cuisine.

One thing Marseille prides itself on even more than food is its beaches. While the temperatures and quality can vary you’ll be spoilt for choice. Plage du Roucas Blanc, Plage Borély and Plage Bonneveine are widely regarded as some of the best places to chill out, catch some surf or just grab a beer at a beachside bar.

After all this eating and sunbathing you may feel like immersing yourself in some of Marseille culture and history. There are plenty of museums to fill your time with, you’ll find Musée d’Archéologie Méditerranéenne (Museum of Mediterranean Archeology) and Musée d’Arts Africains, Océaniens & Amérindiens (Museum of African, Oceanic & American Indian Art) within Centre de la Vieille Charité. The Notre Dame de la Garde is probably the most renowned landmark in Marseille and, aside from its architectural beauty, the views from the church’s 148ft tower are staggeringly impressive.
