23 JuneThe Night of San Juan is one of the most amazing evenings in Seville as every year locals hit the beaches to light bonfires and celebrate. A ritualistic event, traditionally people leap over the fires before jumping into the sea after midnight. A night of eating, drinking and music, this is a great spectacle.
Barcelona - Pride
18th-28th JuneOne of Europe’s biggest gay pride celebrations, the festival sees around 100,000 attendees flock to Barcelona for nearly two weeks of events, debates and parties.
Valencia - La Tomatina
31st AugustAny festival based entirely around the act of throwing tomatoes at each other should be given some praise. Dubbed ‘The World’s Biggest Food Fight’, every year La Tomatina attracts an estimated 20,000 - 40,000 fruit-flinging revellers. The festival itself takes place in the relatively tiny Bunol, but many visitors will stay in nearby Valencia.
Madrid - St Antonio de la Flordia
13th JuneThe feast of San Antonio is another of Spain’s summer Saint’s celebrations. Locals parade in traditional dress before the days baptismal-based finale sees devotees plunge their right hand into a basin of holy water.
Lisbon - Santos Populares
St Anthony - 12-13 June, St John - 23-24 June and St Peter - 28-29 JuneThroughout the second half of June Lisbon plays host to a series of parades honouring their most popular saints. Spread over three weeks, expect something a little different from each event.
