Getting Around

Paris is huge, and getting around can be time consuming. The metro system is easy to use and efficient, but doesn’t run at night and we think there are better ways to see the city! Our personal opinion? The best way to see Paris is by scooter or bike, and you can find rental companies everywhere. Lime, WIND, Circ, and BIRD are just a few of the many available. Just download the app, turn on your GPS, and find the bike or scooter nearest you!

Another great way to ensure you see all the sights is a bus tour. Purchase a day ticket, which allows you to hop on and off wherever the bus stops, and you’ll also learn tons about the landmarks and city. It’s also a good way to ensure you really see the whole city, and can make note of where you want to revisit.

Top Sights

Eiffel Tower

One of the first places you’ll want to visit is the Eiffel Tower. It’s easily the most recognisable landmark in Paris, and a must visit! If you want to go up the tower, you’ll have to purchase a ticket in advance, but we think you get a better view from the ground. Pack a picnic lunch and take in its splendour during the day, and return at night to see it sparkle! They call it the City of Lights for a reason.

Musee de Orsay

For those who want to visit a museum with a smaller crowd, we recommend Musee d’Orsay. The museum is housed in a former railway station, and is home to the largest collection of impressionist and post-impressionism art in the world. You’ll find tons of pieces by artists such as Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, and Degas. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon!

Louvre

Paris is home to some pretty amazing museums, and the Louvre is one of the top things to do. But don’t expect to see all of it: it’s estimated that would take roughly 200 days!  The Louvre is home to famous art pieces like the DaVinci’s Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and Liberty Leading the People, among many others. And even if you don’t have time for a proper visit, the exterior is enough to marvel at.

Notre Dame

Paris is also quite famous for its churches, so a visit to Notre Dame is also a must! While the church suffered damage due to a fire in 2019, it’s been under construction to restore it back to its former beauty. And while Europe is full of impressive churches, cathedrals, and basilicas, this one is especially gorgeous.

Sacre Coeur

Located in the heart of Montmatre, Sacre Coeur is another one of the top things to do in Paris. What makes this church a must see are the charming views of the city you’ll get from here. We especially coming here in the evening for the best light. You’ll know what we mean when you see it for yourself!

Catacombs

For something spooky and rather historical, we recommend a visit to the Paris Catacombs! Spanning 11,000 square metres, The Catacombs are home to the bodies of over 6 million Parisians from the 18th century. Much of the Catacombs are not open for visitors, but a small section is, so we recommend booking a tour!

Montmarte

This is easily one of our favourite places to visit in Paris. Montmatre is a charming neighbourhood with a bohemian vibe you’ll surely fall in love with. Home to the famous Moulin Rouge, amazing restaurants, cafes, shops, and more, this neighbourhood will certainly keep you busy. Wander its charming streets and get your cameras ready: it’s full of great Instagram spots!

St. Germain

Popular among Paris’s student population, St. Germain is another great neighbourhood you’ll want to lose yourself in. And if you’re a literature fan, it’s full of famous cafes and restaurants that were once frequented by writers like Simone de Beauvoir, Ernest Hemingway, and James Joyce (just to name a few). Like Montmartre, you’ll also love the vibe here!

Père-Lachaise Cemetery

Visiting a cemetery in Paris might seem a little morose, but the Père-Lachaise is worth a visit. This peaceful plot in the east of the city is the final resting place of famous people like Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Delacroix and a stunning mix of historically significant figures. It’s quite big and therefore easy to get lost in. To avoid this simply buy a €2 map from the newspaper stall when you exit the Père-Lachaise Metro station.

Food and Drink

Paris is full of incredible places to dine, and it’s not just about French cuisine. You can find an array of international foods here, but for a more in-depth look at the Paris food scene, check out our guide here

While in Paris, one must try traditional pastries, baguette, macron, and crêpe. Check out our guide to the best pastries and sweets in Paris. We also recommend sitting at a cafe terrace to enjoy a cappuccino and a pastry, just like the locals do.

Paris is also full of amazing food markets if you want to prepare your own meals or have a picnic lunch. Markets are a cheaper way to explore the gastro side of Paris, and will put you more in touch with the locals.

Shopping

Shopping in Paris is incredible, no matter what you’re after. Being home to some of the world’s most famous design houses, you can imagine the range here. After some designer & couture goods, or just want to window shop? Then head to the famous Champs Elysees!

But Paris isn’t just about the expensive brands. If you’re an avid bargain hunter nothing beats Vide Greniers (Attic Sales) which occupies several blocks of neighbourhoods selling second hand items. There are also many one-off vintage shops like Free “P”Star and Coiffeur Vintage. The queues might be long at these shops but they move quickly, and it’s worth it to get those one of a kind pieces. You can also scout out one of the many great flea markets in Paris and find yourself a unique souvenir!

And of course, scent-lovers should not miss out in the French capital. Paris’s many glamorous boutique perfumeries offer the most heady, glitzy, fragrances, and can make for a great souvenir from your adventures.
