Hostel Information

hostel ruthensteiner

Vienna's original independent backpacker's hostel, Hostel Ruthensteiner is the perfect place to stay - with its friendly, international atmosphere in a smoke-free environment. Great prices, kitchen, gardens and reception open around the clock!

Lonely Planet has this to say about us: “If stars were given out for hostels, the first truly independent backpackers in central Europe would be a five. Start with a quirky low-key vibe then add in an immaculate, modern facility with more renovations in progress, mix in a strong dose of personality and options galore and you’ll have a feel for this place. A beautifully handmade wooden bar, music-lounge room, and lovely garden area also enhance the surroundings.”

Newly renovated, our early 1800's historical building is just a 3-minute walk from the Westbahnhof Train Station and one quiet street over from the Mariahilferstrasse, Vienna’s main shopping mile,  it is conveniently situated between the City Center and lovely Palace Schoenbrunn. From here you can either walk to many major sites or hop on the metro or tram just a minute or 2 away.

We can offer you Vienna's best-priced beds from dorm beds -both mixed and female only (using your own sheets or renting ours for the 1st night only for 2-), to beds in Double, 2,3,4,5,6 and 8 bedded rooms, including linens. Our rooms are very comfortable and cozy. In each room you will find a sink with hot and cold water. Showers and toilets are just down the hall (dorm-style). We also have several rooms (doubles, quads, 6 and 8 bed rooms with private showers and toilets).

"Cleanliness & friendliness" is our motto, helping you feel at home is our passion! Our friendly, knowledgeable, multilingual staff will strive to make your stay in Vienna the very best!!!  We look forward to helping you plan your itinerary, tell you about special exhibitions, sign you up for your bike or “Grape-Grazing” tour, tell you where the best restaurants and clubs are, how to get tickets for concerts and for the opera and how to make your way to the Danube Island for a taste of the Caribbean on a hot, summer night!

Your days will probably be very full, but try to take an afternoon off for much-need relaxation in one of our 2 gorgeous gardens to breathe the fresh air, listen to the birds, smell the flowers and to catch up on your journal or email or even a nap before an evening of entertainment. Start with a Happy Hour cocktail or delicious, locally-brewed Ottakringer beer fresh on tap in our bar on the terrace before heading out.  Or you might just head to the supermarket just around the corner and buy those secret ingredients for a perfect Barbeque night in the garden with new-found friends from around the world. Then move into the bar for an impromptu jam session. Here you will find an assortment of musical instruments (piano, guitars, ukulele, djembe, and more). After all, music is the universal language and it always seems to get people “in the mood”!

Come and let us take care of you! We promise you won’t be disappointed!
