10 Best Foodie Destinations in Europe

Looking for the best foodie destinations in Europe? We’ve scoped out the 10 best spots across the continent to satisfy your inner foodie.

Europe is a continent full of incredible food destinations, and we want to show you the best! Many European kitchens have gained international fame, but enjoying it from the source is always an experience in itself. And while it might have been a bit of a challenge to eat your way around Europe as a vegan or vegetarian 10 years ago, it’s hardly the case anymore. Many kitchens have adapted traditional recipes to accommodate new trends in diets, so you can at least experience what makes a place with its food.

Gastronomy says a lot about the local history. and you can learn a lot by getting to know it. In order to help you see and eat your way around, here’s our guide to the 10 Best Foodie Destinations in Europe.

1. Provence, France

If there’s one place to eat really well in France, it’s in the South. Provence has made its place in European cuisine by its own merit, and is the first on our list of the 10 Best Foodie Destinations in Europe. When visiting Provence, you must try the Tapénade, or olive pâté, in both green and black. Another thing you have to try is Socca bread, which is made from chickpeas, pepper, and herbes de Provence. If you want to complete the picnic, do it with the salade niçoise and a loaf of olive bread. Provençal cuisine is most enjoyable in summer, especially with a good wine from the region!

2. Frankfurt am Main, Germany

While this might come as a surprise to many, we feel this very international city in Germany deserves a spot on our top 10 foodie destinations in Europe. Frankfurt is famous for a few items of their own, but it’s their wide selection of international cuisine that really impresses us. Interested in some Israeli food? Then head to Bar Shuka in the trendy Bahnhofsviertel. Or how about some Mexican food? We love Joe Peña’s in Bockenheim. If you want to take a walk and choose something along the way, then we recommend heading to Bergerstraße where you can find nearly anything you could imagine!

3. Sorrento, Italy

This gorgeous town on the Amalfi Coast is one of our favourite foodie destinations in Europe. While the food and drink is delicious year round, we encourage you to visit in late Spring and Summer so you can get the freshest gastronomical experience. The seafood here is fresh and an experience you won’t want to miss. For something truly unique to Sorrento, you’ll have to try treccia cheese in any pasta dish. It’s a regional take on mozzarella and a must try while here!

4. Lake Como, Italy

Italy deserves two spots on our 10 best foodie destinations in Europe list, and Lake Como is where we’re taking you next! If you like fish, be sure to try out Risotto with pesce persico, a delectable favourite which pairs wonderfully with a white wine. Polenta and Insalata Caprese are also local favourites we’re sure will leave impressions on you. Like most of Italy, the pizza in Lake Como is absolutely fantastic and is always a safe bet when you’re feeling overwhelmed with choice!

5. Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain)

Famous for its food, Barcelona is home to some incredible dishes and is a foodies paradise. Not to be confused with Spanish food, Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region and therefore serves something different than the rest of the country. For example, you have to try Catalan cream and sausages like fuet, butifarra, and calçotadas. The well-known pan amb tomaquet is truly the delight of any breakfast. And if you’re looking for some wine, try anything from Priorat.

6. Anywhere, Greece

We aren’t kidding – the whole country is one of the best foodie destinations in Europe, and possibly the world. Mediterranean cuisine is very inexpensive, and it tastes incredible. Moussaka is undoubtedly the star dish, but the Greek kitchen offers so much more. They’re famous for salads, feta cheese, dolma (grape leaves stuffed with rice) gyros with pita bread, and tzatziki sauce. Lovers of a healthy diet will find Greece an ideal place to eat!

Oh, sunny Lisbon! This city has emerged over the past few years as a great foodie destination, and offers a variety of things to indulge in. Portuguese food is pretty proud of their seafood and meat dishes, but if you’re following a vegetarian or vegan diet, you won’t miss out here. Our favourite spot is Vegan Junkies, which is a vegan junk food restaurant serving up some of the most mind-blowing ‘junk’ food you can imagine! And don’t forget to try the world famous pastel de nata.

Although it’s only partially European, Istanbul offers us several delicious drinks and meals. As for the food, we can highlight kebabköfte, and sweets like baklava and lokum.
