10 Most Instagrammable Places in Rotterdam

For all those happy snappers out there, Rotterdam provides a wealth of colourful must-see spots to feel instagood. Europe’s biggest port and one of the world’s leading cities for architecture; Rotterdam has pinned itself firmly on the map for exciting places to visit. With cobbled streets juxtaposed to cutting-edge modern architecture, the city is buzzing with history and creativity. We love the quirky corners and huge buildings that live side by side in this Dutch city. For those photo lovers who want to explore the urban landscape: here are our tips for the top 10 places to get your ‘gram.

#1 Erasmus Bridge

Affectionately known as The Swan due to its asymmetric lines, this awesome bridge cuts a great shape on the Rotterdam skyline in white. Checking out the view from the waterfront is impressive enough, but this is also a cool spot for sunset with the city as a backdrop. At night the bridge is lit up and looks futuristic with the high rise cityscape behind. #Awesome

#2 Cube House

These vertiginous 1970 architectural gems are a quirky bright yellow photo opportunity waiting to be snapped. The cubes are angled at 45 degrees and designed to create optimum living space (you can even check out the inside!), and are symbolic as trees clustered to form a forest. Designed by Piet Blom, they are still regarded as avant garde architecture almost 50 years later for their form and unique balanced structure.

#3 Centraal Station

More than just a place to hop off the train, this is another architectural sight with one side of the structure rising from the ground to form an arrow pointing to the city centre. Also a good place to find snacks!

#4 Kralingse Plas

Spoiler alert: there are windmills! This park provides a beautiful lakeside area to view the city on the horizon and is a peaceful place for a picnic or sunset. Enjoy the changing light on the city and see the windmills on the waterfront.

#5 The Euromast

At 186.6m the Euromast is the tallest observation tower in the Netherlands, with additional decks added since its 1950s inception by designer Hugh Masskant. As all cool towers demand- there’s a rotating observation spot to get the best views of the city, and a couple of decks where you can even grab a bite to eat. This is the best spot for a birds-eye view!

#6 Markthall

A relatively new kid on the block, Market Hall is a foody paradise to have a tasty eating experience while being surrounded by a piece of art itself. This instagood construction is set on a grand scale with vibrantly colourful architecture housing this food mecca. Eat your way from stall to stall trying local and international delicacies then enjoy the views looking up. The ceiling here comprises one of the largest pieces of artwork there is: The Horn of Plenty painted by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. This is also a great spot to check out the busy street scene in Blaak Square.

#7 Delfshaven

One of the oldest historic areas of Rotterdam, Delfshaven survived the WWII bombings and retains the canal side charm of yesteryear. Skip along the waterfront and see the old breweries and churches, taste some gin, explore the boutique shops and workshops and the 18thc replica warship. This is a unique place to see Rotterdam’s historic buildings and step into the past.

#8 Luchtsingel

For those who love bridges then don’t miss the bright yellow Luchtsingel which is a walkway connecting pedestrians from the centre of town to the North of the city. This one is dazzlingly bright and symmetrical, so get your insta on here.

#9 De Bijenkorf Rooftop

This is all about the views from ‘the beehive’s’ roof. From this well known high-end shopping centre you can see all the city’s highlights including the Euromast, Maastoren, Luxor Theatre and De Brug. Try the cafe here for a meal with a view.

#10 Maastunnel

This is the oldest underwater tunnel in the Netherlands and dates back to 1942, but still looks a bit space-age. It’s actually used by lots of Rotterdammers to get across town daily, but has made itself a name on Instagram with its satisfying symmetry.

We hope you enjoyed our tips for instagram lovers and enjoy exploring the sights on offer in Rotterdam. Book your bed at Room Rotterdam for the best genuine backpacker experience!
