Alternative Valentine’s Day in Rome

After Paris, Rome may well be one of the most romantic cities on the planet.

This year Pope Francis has even invited engaged couples to meet him at the Vatican for an official blessing on the 14th February.  Named  ‘The Joy of Yes Forever’, the announcement of this special day has had couples racing to register their names on the invites list, rather than booking themselves into restaurants or scouring shops for presents for their loved ones.

But Rome has a hidden secret, and if you are looking to avoid loved-up couples and fluffy heart-shaped toys completely, then Rome might just be your answer for an Alternative Valentine’s Day.

The Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin is in Piazza della Bocca della Verita’ in Rome.

You can take the metro to Circo Massimo and then it’s a short walk from there.

In summer time the Basilica is open from 9am until 8pm, and during the winter months the closing time is around 5pm.

From outside the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin might not impress you like St Peter’s, but head inside and not only will you find the famous ‘Bocca della Verita‘ (anybody that hasn’t seen Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday should before they get here!) but keep on searching and near the altar you’ll find the remains of St Valentine himself.  And if you’re looking for something to keep your mind off the fact that you’re alone on the most romantic day of the year, then remember that on this special day we’re essentially celebrate the death of the very person who’s skull is in front of you, all dolled up with its flower headdress.

So instead of watching loved up couples chuck their 10 cent pieces into the Trevi Fountain, gazing into each others’ eyes and making their wishes for ever-lasting love, think of poor St. Valentine, locked up in a glass box somewhere in one of Rome’s winding backstreets.
