CABANYAL: THE MAGIC OF THE OLD FISHERMAN`S VILLAGE

Everyone visiting Valencia and seeking for a very local experience must know Cabanyal. Cabanyal is a neighbourhood, located in the eastern part of the city of Valencia, which is part of the sea village.

El Cabanyal is an historical old Fisherman´s Village in Valencia, next to the biggest and widest beach La Malvarrosa,Valencia’s main beach. It is filled with interesting and colorful buildings right next to each other and is called the Valencia`s own little Havana because of that. El Cabanyal is also listed in the World Heritage List of Unesco.

The people of the Cabanyal area are a very big part of the history of the area. They value their homes and their neighborhood greatly, because there was a time that the area was almost destroyed.

The former mayor of the town wanted to run the buildings down because she wanted to build a bigger access road to the beach from the city. Luckily, the new mayor decided otherwise and the people got to keep their homes.

El Cabanyal is a place for the fishermen and their families and the other side, Canyamelar, has been a place for the wealthier people. The area has always been filled with gypsy families amongst all others. The colorful variety of the people and the families and the hard history of the area really makes Cabanyal a place worth visiting.

Up until now, El Cabanyal has survived the big bulldozers, the big fires and cholera epidemic of the 1700-1800 centuries, the Spanish civil war and the great floods of the 19th century.

This is really the part where you can feel the vibe of Havana in Spain.  You can see men smoking cigars on the streets, old ladies watching their grandchildren playing and running around, laundry hanging from the balconies and loud noise from people at the various restaurants and tapas bars. Every once in a while there is a big festivity at the street closing all the traffic. The festivities are filled with families and you can see big pans of Paella cooking with loud party music playing on the background. Last but not least, every Thursday, the streets of Cabanyal are filled with sale stands and people running around. It is of course time of the weekly Cabanyal Market!
