If you visit Sevilla, you’ll likely have some people tell you, “Sevilla tiene un color especial”. In English, this means, “Seville has a special colour”, and this statement is totally true about this sunny destination! It’s an explosion of colours that makes every single person who visits unexplainably happy.

A Bit About Seville

Seville offers a lot of attractions for everyone, and features an impressive mix of architecture styles. In brief, the top sights to visit include das Real Alcázar de Sevilla, das Plaza de Espana, and the Setas de Sevilla. But for a more in-depth look into Seville and what to do, check out our post on What To Do in Seville.

A Bit About Tapas

Let’s start the Seville Food Guide with a little lesson on this very common word, shall we? ‘Tapas’ will become part of your everyday language while in Seville. The word refers to small plates of foods for a meal, rather than a single dish. It’s the most common type of meal you’ll find in Spain. And Seville is no exception.

The “tapas” concept was born in the Middle Ages. As a way to avoid patrons from getting too drunk, restaurant owners would put a ‘cap’ on their glasses. This ‘cap’ was a single plate of food, known as ‘tapa’. The plural, being ‘tapas’ became a common dining tradition across Spain and is one of the most sought after meals today. While it’s not necessarily a way for restaurant owners to avoid their patrons from getting too drunk anymore, it’s at least cool to know where the tradition came from!

Nowadays, Tapas Restaurants are all over the country, and feature items such as meats, cheeses, and vegetables. And they’re quite cheap, with most costing around 2€ a plate. So whether you’re after cheap meals, or enjoying a romantic night out, tapas are always a great choice! And in all honesty, it’s all you’ll really want to eat here anyway. But if you do find yourself in a situation where you can’t find something ON the menu, feel free to ask if they have any off-menu items, as it’s quite common!

You’ll likely lose count of the tapas you’ll try, but it’s all part of the experience in Seville!

Must Visit Tapas Restaurants in Seville

I’ve travelled quite a bit in my life, and like any good traveller, food is always a big part of my experience in any destination. While Spanish food is heavy on the meat and seafood side, there are still tons of vegetarian options available. Below you can find a summary of my favourite tapas bars and their neighbourhoods. It’s the best part of the Seville Food Guide anyway!

Alameda de Hercules

This neighbourhood is known for their relaxed atmosphere and easy going people. Throughout Alameda de Hercules, you’ll find cheap bars, good music, and amazing tapas restaurants. You could call it a hippie sort of place, but it’s a worthy neighbourhood to mention in any Seville Food Guide!

Let’s start with the amazing Dúo Tapas Bar. It’s a fantastic spot with mouth-watering tapas. I tried the Carrillada Parmentier, which are pork cheeks with a special potato cream called parmentier. I also tried the Presa Iberica, which is the fantastic Iberian prey. Both were truly delicious!

Slow Cooked Egg

If you’re looking for something a bit high class, then head to Espacio Eslava. While it might be a bit different than the other bars in the area, it’s still cheap and the menu will remind you you’re in Andalusia. Easily my favourite spot in Seville, it’d be a shame if you missed out on Espacio Eslava! I had quite a few plates while here, all of which I’d happily recommend. Start with the artichokes served with fried garlic and cod shavings. Then try some grilled razor clams with lemon. Finish the meal off with the slow-cooked egg served on boletus cake with caramelised wine reduction. Starting to get hungry? Then don’t miss this restaurant!

Looking to try some wine and snails? This combo is rather popular in Seville, and you have to try it! Head to Plaza Pumarejo to find the Bodega Bar Umbretes Und die Bodega Camacho. They have the best caracoles in town!

Triana

Triana is an authentic neighbourhood where you won’t find many tourists. So this means you should visit for the food as you’re bound to find authentic dishes here! It’s probably the ‘best kept secret’ in this Seville Food Guide, so taking this section seriously is a must.

A visit to Triana is incomplete without a stop at Las Golondrinas. Seville locals profess it’s the best bar in the neighbourhood, so who’s to say otherwise?! You can order anything on the menu and you’ll be more than satisfied with your choice.

Another great spot to check out in Triana is Taberna Miami. Take your pick from sirloin with roquefort, black rice with squid, grilled squid, french fries with roquefort, fresh tomatoes with garlic, or fresh gazpacho. Are your tastebuds tingling yet?!

City Centre

I’m not a real fan of eating in the city centre no matter where I am, but Seville is somehow an exception. I guess it’s the magic of this impressive destination!

Head to Ovejas Negras as it’s one of the best spots in the city centre. I had the saâm, which is a soft-shelled crab with Korean cocktail sauce. I also recommend the double chin taco with chipotle, and pico de gallo with pineapple.

If the above mentioned bar is too busy, then head to El Pintón just a few meters away. Set in a textile store built in 1790, it was later was renovated by Aníbal González, who is a famous Spanish architect. The bar occupies both the old tailoring workshop and a patio with columns of wood and tiles, indicative of the architect’s style. But the gastronomic offer will certainly leave you satisfied. Try the cod fritters with alioli, as well as the tomato or the sweet potato chips with roquefort.
