Stockholm Food Guide – The Sweet Stuff

Coffee or ‘Fika’

If you like coffee, then Sweden will keep you more than satisfied. It’s so popular in Stockholm, it absolutely had to be the first point on our Stockholm Food Guide. Swedish cafes are a lovely place to enjoy a break from the bustling streets, or escape the chill of a winter’s day. Traditionally, people in Stockholm drink coffee with a cookie or pastry, and this snack is called, ‘Fika’. You’ll see signs for it everywhere, so we encourage you to indulge in . Swedish coffee is typically stronger, so keep it in mind when ordering your brew!

If any sweet topping qualifies as a staple in Scandinavian countries it’s Ligonberry jam. Usually accompanied with potato cake and some tasty black pudding, we think it’s best served with a slice of Ostkaka (a traditional Swedish cake). This delicious jam is an absolute must in our Stockholm food guide. It’s worthy to note that the jams in Stockholm are made from the finest berries, heaps of sugar, and small amounts of fresh water. You can really taste the quality and care put into this beloved jam!

The Swedish pastry is a creation with sugar, oatmeal, butter, cocoa and vanilla sugar for flavour. The balls are quite small in size and are the perfect treat, especially on the go. Chokladball are rolled around in coconut and sugar, then sprinkled with more shredded coconut for the final product. The pastry is very tasty and is available in almost all bakeries in Stockholm.

If you like cinnamon buns, then you are certainly going to love this sweet one! The kanelbullar is omnipresent in Sweden and certainly one of the top on our Stockholm food guide. We promise they’ll be the tastiest and most mouth-watering cinnamon buns you’ve ever had, and are commonly eaten at breakfast, or throughout the day. They’re also a popular feature for Fika.

Stockholm Food Guide – Seafood

The Nordic dish is a delight for any seafood lover, and a staple in ANY Stockholm food guide. Gravlax is a raw salmon dish, served in sugar and salt, along with some dill and other garnishes. If you go to any restaurant and ask for a recommendation, this is usually they’re first suggestion.

This is another widely famous fish dishes in Stockholm and a worthy mention in our food guide. And we promise these crustaceans will leave you begging for more. The shrimp are cooked in their shells on boats, and are prepared with a range of garnishes to give it a special flavour. Both locals and tourists alike rave about this dish, and we love it, too!

Okay, we can thank Ikea for making this dish famous around the world. But traditional Swedish meatballs are so much more than what you get at the famous blue and yellow furniture shop. They’re a huge part of our culinary history, and we invite you to try a few while in Stockholm! But we have to warn you: once you try the real deal, you might struggle to enjoy Ikea’s version again!

This tasty wild rose soup is perfect for warming up on a cold day in Stockholm. Nyponsoppa is famous for its syrupy texture, grainy consistency, and earthy flavours, making it quite the unique dish. This would be a terrible food guide if we didn’t mention this warm dish!

This dish is popular in all households of Sweden. Filmjölk is a thick mixture of buttermilk, yogurt, and kefir, which is fermented to make the final product. You can have it for breakfast, or as a mid-afternoon snack to tie you over between meals. Most eat it with a granola mix and elderberry syrup.

This one probably seems way off the map, but it wouldn’t be a true Stockholm food guide if we didn’t mention the pizza here! While you can certainly source a traditional Italian pizza pie, the Swedes are not shy when it comes to experimenting with the famous dish. Don’t be surprised to find toppings like raisins, banana & curry, meatballs, or peanuts on your pizza. You’ll either love it or hate it.
