Local Specialties

Smørrebrød

Easily the most famous item in the Danish kitchen, Smørrebrød is first up in our Copenhagen Food Guide. It’s an open sandwich, traditionally topped with fish (or meat), veggies, and cheese. But the Danes are trendy people, so you can find lots of modern takes on this delicious sandwich. You’ll find it all over the city, and it’s a great option if you’re not looking for a heavy meal.

Rød Pølse

Like they do in Sweden, Denmark also loves hot dogs. Rød Pølse, literally translating to ‘red sausage’, can also be found all over the city and is a great option for a bite to eat on the go. It’s served in a fresh bun, and you can go wild on the toppings!

Pickled Herring

Denmark is proud of their seafood, and pickled herring is a must-try when in Copenhagen. While the Danish kitchen features several other types of fish, this is the most popular by a long shot.

Michelin Star Restaurants

If you’re into fine dining, or trying some award winning meals, Copenhagen will spoil you. The city boasts 13 Michelin Star restaurants, with a combined 20 stars. While we encourage you to try wherever you find appealing, our favourite is Noma, 3 time winner of the Best Restaurant in the World.

Copenhagen is also home to a very special Michelin Star distinction, and it’s not Nordic food. Kiin Kiin is the only Thai restaurant outside Thailand to be awarded a Michelin Star, so you know it’s worth a stop! The food is not necessarily traditional, it has a contemporary twist to it which will certainly tantalise your taste buds.

Other Places to Eat

Kalaset

Kalaset is a great place to relax after a long stroll, and maybe play a game of backgammon. The menu features a great house made burger, with a great vegetarian option, and tasty salads. Saturday’s has a “2 for 1” on beer and cocktails between 10-12 pm.

Torvehallerne

Visiting markets in any European city will surely put you in touch with some of their best local delicacies, so we recommend a visit to Torvehallerne. You can purchase and test a variety of spices, produce, speciality ingredients, and fresh foods while here. A visit to Torvehallerne will energise you to continue exploring the city! It’s a great stop on our Copenhagen food guide.

Grød

If you’re a fan of porridge, then you’re in luck! Grød is where you’ll want to go as its menu is completely dedicated to porridge. And the porridge is far from boring: Grød takes the concept to a new level, interpreting it as any grains stirred together to a mass. Dishes include a variety of fruits, berries and spices, but they don’t just serve breakfast. Come here for dinner and try one of their risotto-style dishes made with unusual grains, and finish off with dessert. An inspirational visit for your future winter breakfasts is a must when in Copenhagen.

Our top recommendation is Copenhagen Downtown Hostel. With a cool Scandinavian retro design, you’ll love their friendly hostel and lively bar. The staff are also well versed in the local food scene, so don’t shy away from asking them for tips!
