Gyros & Souvlaki

This is for the meat lovers! Gyros & Souvlaki are the most famous items from the Greek kitchen, and you can find them all over Athens! But what’s the difference between the two? We’ll easily break it down for you here:

  • Gyros (pronouced yee-ros if you want to try your hand at Greek!) is a mixture of meats, cooked on a rotating skewer.
  • Souvlaki is either chicken or lamb, is cooked on a skewer and served with pita bread.

Now that we have that cleared up, you probably want to know where to find the best gyros! Check out Bairaktaris Taverna in Monastiraki for the most delicious experience!

And for the best Souvlaki, we recommend Kalamaki Bar– famous for their locally sourced ingredients!

Seafood

You haven’t had a proper meal in Athens until you’ve had some fresh seafood! Of course you can find plenty of seafood IN the city, but places near the water are always a bit more ideal. We recommend Margaro if you want the ultimate seafood experience in Athens. A visit here requires patience however, as the place is always full. But that’s a pretty universal sign the food is irresistible, isn’t it?! Our favourites include shrimp, grilled octopus, fried squid, and mussels.

Olives & Feta

As per tradition, no Greek meal should begin without a Greek salad topped with feta cheese and Kalamata olives. This is a light yet tasty precursor to the culinary Hellenic tour you’ll take over the course of your meal!

Snack time

Athens is a rather big city with tons of things to see and do, so you’re bound to get a bit peckish between meals. The Greek love their coffees, and have a variety of ways for you to enjoy it, even in the hottest of weather. The Greeks have created several versions of cold coffee, and we recommend trying a Frappe or a Freddo for your java fix.

Drinks (alcohol)

As you’ve probably already figured out, every country in Europe has that one drink thats near and dear to their culture – and in Athens, they have two! Ouzo and Raki are the most famous and traditional of all liquors in Greece, so we recommend trying them both. But if you’re not a fan of anise or fennel (basically that black liquorice taste) maybe it’s best to try something else. Greece is also home to an array of delicious wines and beers, so if you’re not a Raki or Ouzo fan, no problem!
