What NOT to Pack Guide – Backpacking Europe

What NOT to Pack Guide for Backpacking Europe

Backpacking is fun, but do you know what’s not fun? Overweight luggage fees, sweating because your bag is so heavy, and not having room to pick up cool souvenirs along the way.

When it comes to the art of packing, there’s a few hard and fast rules. Leave your valuables behind, don’t pack food, and only bring what you need! Here’s our what NOT to pack guide for backpacking Europe!

1. Excessive amounts of toiletries

These can seriously add weight to your luggage if you aren’t smart about it. We’re not telling you to ditch your skincare routine, but you probably don’t need full sized anything.

Most products come in travel sizes, and if not, pick up some silicone travel tubes. Unless you plan on spending your trip in a remote part of Europe, there’s always an option to pick up more if you run out.

2. Loads of Books

We love books, and we’re sure you do too, but bringing more than one will take up space, add extra weight, and just be an overall pain to lug around. This could be a great time for you to finally try e-books!

Hostels almost always have free book exchange centres as well. Take a book, leave a book, and enjoy!

Looking for suggestions on great books to read while travelling Europe? We have a post to help you decide!

3. Excessive Clothing

This can be a tricky one to navigate in the age of Instagram, but we want you to really take this one seriously! No matter how long you’re travelling for, you don’t need 5 pairs of jeans. Most hostels have laundry facilities, so you can always have clean clothes on hand.

Take versatile items that wash and dry easily, don’t need ironing, and are comfortable to wear. And remember, if you forget something you absolutely need, you can always pick it up on your travels!

4. Gadgets you’re never going to use

Unless you’re a travel blogger, you don’t need your laptop, tripod, or bag of camera lenses. Carefully consider what you’ll actually need, because the fewer expensive items you have, the lower your chances are of disappointment if it gets lost or stolen.

Something you actually could use though is a portable battery to charge your phone while en route!

5. Hairdryer & Straightener

It’s quite likely your hairdryer & straightener aren’t compatible with European or U.K. outlets (yes, they’re different), which can result in a blown fuse and a broken product. Check your hostel to see if they have hair dryers, as most do!

6. Illegal items

This should go without saying, but we advise you to NOT pack anything illegal. For example, travelling with fireworks, animals, or weapons can put your entire holiday in jeopardy. Even if it’s just a lighter, if it’s shaped like a gun, airport authorities can confiscate it and take you in for questioning.

And just because something is legal in your country, and you know it’s decriminalised in another country, maybe leave your weed at home. We’re talking to you, Canada 😉
