Famous Hostels Eurotrip: Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is the seventh stop of my Famous Hostels Eurotrip!

Copenhagen, with its colourful harbour, biking culture and a hippie town in the middle of the center, is one of the coolest cities in Europe. Since I always wanted to get a taste of the Nordic culture it seemed the perfect place to go.

From Amsterdam I took the train to the Danish capital with my Interrail Global Pass. The view from my window seat was amazing as the train drove though the stunning autumn landscape of the Netherlands and Germany. When we were about to enter Germany an elderly man sitting next to me suddenly said that soon we would have to leave the train as it was going on a ferry. I couldn’t believe it, the train on a ferry? Yes, to cross the border between Germany and Denmark the train goes on the ferry and just continues on the other side, what a cool experience.

In Copenhagen I stayed in the middle of the city center at Copenhagen Downtown Hostel. From my room I had a stunning view over the city and could easily walk to all the places I wanted to see. There is a bar/restaurant at the hostel with the best pizzas ever – so make sure to try them when you’re around. The hostel also has a free walking tour leaving every morning and has a delicious breakfast buffet.

After breakfast I decided to walk to the most iconic place in Copenhagen, Nyhavn (new harbour), these are colourful harbour side houses from the 17th century. There is an amazing vibe to the place as there are a lot of restaurants along the waterfront. You can also do a boat tour from here if you’re interested.

From Nyhavn I decided to go to Freetown Christiania, a hippie town in the middle of the center that has its own rules and regulations.

It declared itself independent of the rest of Denmark and Copenhagen and is an interesting place to have a wander around and- if you’re into it- you can legally purchase and smoke and cannabis there (which is not allowed in the rest of Denmark).

Another really cool spot to check out is Papirøen, which is an indoor street food market where you can sit down and try food from all over the world. It’s located in what once was the paper factory hence the name. This is a place where you can hang around all night as they often have life music too. However, there are also many jazz bars around the hostel where you can see life bands play (ask the reception for the best places to go, they give really good tips).

Also really close to the hostel is a theme park, located in the middle of the city center of Copenhagen.

The theme park is called Trivoli Gardens and you can get an entrance ticket to go in all the attractions or one where you can just go inside and see their cool decorations, it looks amazing. Moreover, in Copenhagen is also the Guinness Book of Records Museum, which is a fun way to get an insight into the most incredible records from all over.

Nevertheless, my favourite thing to do in Copenhagen was actually to simply discover all the nice little cafes, local breweries and delicious restaurants. My favourite discovery was the Union Kitchen (where you have to order a cappuccino!).

After two amazing days in Copenhagen I took the train back to Germany to visit its capital city Berlin. I will write more about my time there soon. In the mean time make sure to follow my journey on the Famous Hostels Instagram!
