Want to hear all about how my time in beautiful Málaga went? Read on to see what I got up to!

One of the worst things that can happen while backpacking is having to rush to catch your train, bus, or plane. Unfortunately, this was how I started my trip to Málaga. I left Cat’s Hostel in Madrid about 35 mins before my train departed. The main train station, Puerta de Atocha, is only a 15 min walk (downhill) from the hostel. But due to the weight of my backpack and my groggy morning, I nearly missed it!

Día 1 – Málaga

Upon leaving the station in Madrid, train service began. My two hour high speed ride included a free lunch! I sat back, enjoyed the meal and in no time was welcomed by the bright, warm sun in Málaga. For convenience, I took a taxi to Oasis Backpackers Hostel. 7€ well spent!

Juan welcomed me, set me up for my stay, and gave some recommendations of things to do. I set off to bask in the sun and explore the city centre. Málaga gave me a sense of what the south of Spain was like – the city was bright and the people were as warm as the sun.

I strolled down the main avenue, peeked into some shops, and people watched by the port. It was lovely to see people out enjoying the weather. I walked along Malagueta Beach and watched everyone sport big smiles on their faces as they splashed around the water, chatted with friends, and played in the sand.

After some time in the sun, I grabbed some dinner and made my way back to the hostel. I wanted to do some work in an outdoor spot. So, to the rooftop I went, and it was so fancy! The ambient music in the background was perfect to keep me in work mode.

Día 2 – Málaga

I started my morning with a classic hostel breakfast. Breakfast is 3,50€ and available at reception. After fuelling up I went on a Free Walking Tour with Sun Tours. We met at Plaza de la Constitución and did a complete tour of the city in under 3 hours!

Susanna was our tour guide, and told us everything from history, to politics, and her personal love for the city. We visited many spots, including Iglesia de la Concepción, Mercado Central de Atarazanas, and Antonio Banderas’ apartment building! The tour ended at Pablo Picasso’s birthplace.

I started off the evening at a tavern called Antigua Casa de Guardia. As we walked in we could clearly see this wasn’t a “touristy” spot. We tried Susana’s recommendation of Moscatel and Pajarete, which were both very sweet and strong. A must visit spot while in Málaga

We then made our way to Mirador de Gibralfaro, rumoured to have the best views in the city! The fantastic views include the famous bull ring I tried to find the day before, but somehow managed to miss. We ventured behind Gibralfaro to catch a glimpse of the sunset. Before calling it a night, I got a beer and tapas. The perfect way to wrap up the day!

Día 3 – Málaga

I started my last day at the beach! Locals recommended Playa De Huelin, as it was only 10 mins away from the train station.

The entrance to the beach showcased beautiful palm trees and a playground. The water was calm and wasn’t busy. My favourite thing about the beach was the smell of my sunscreen mixed together with the salty ocean breeze. The beach is used mainly by locals so I had a lot of space to relax and lay out my towel. You can rent a towel at the hostel for only 2€!

I relaxed and took in the smells, and sounds and before I knew it, I fell asleep. I woke up quite disoriented from the sun, so I packed my things and went back to the hostel for the Tapas Tour. Getting back was easy! I took Bus 1 for 1,40€. Once back at the hostel I packed my bag to leave in the morning, showered and got ready for dinner.

Unfortunately, the Tapas Tour didn’t pan out as there weren’t enough people, but the guide recommended Taberna Las Cofrade Merchanas. So with my new hostel friends from Australia and the US, we went out and had a great night!

The food was absolutely sensational. We had croquetas, eggplants with honey, eggs and chorizo. The best part was the fluffy, creamy, and garlicky aioli for the croquetas. I highly recommend tapas here!

After dinner we went to La Terraza Oasis for drinks, which is the hostel’s rooftop lounge and bar. I met a big group of hostel goers who wanted to go on the Pub Crawl so I joined! It was an experience of fun and dancing, despite calling it an early night to make my 8 a.m. bus.

Impressions

All in all, Málaga in May was the perfect time to visit because it gave me the best of both worlds! I got to experience plenty of outdoor activities, and not be bothered by too many tourists! I’d certainly recommend Oasis Backpackers Hostel Málaga as it’s in the centre of the historic quarter and it has a beautiful rooftop lounge! A big thank you goes out to all the staff at the hostel who made my stay so comfortable and fun! Until next time!
