The rose city, best known for it’s Berber history, beautiful palaces, and Morocco’s oldest souk, is a perfect place to escape the winter blues. A trip to Marrakech is the perfect way to combine some history and culture with the joy of a warm climate. The palm trees, sunsets, spices and gardens are enough to forget all about winter – and if that doesn’t do it then get yourself into a traditional steaming ham! If the delicious wafting scent of grilled foods is your thing then the night food market in Marrakech’s central Djemaa el Fna Square is unmissable!
If you’re visiting Marrakech then don’t miss out on staying at Equity Point hostel – they have a rooftop with sunset views over the mountains and even a pool!
Greece has always been a favourite for sun seekers and Athens offers a whole heap of historical sites beneath her sunny skies. One of our favourite cities to sit on a terrace eating delicious local food and watching the world go by, there’s also a great art scene, diverse neighbourhoods, and an all night party scene – if you can keep up!
If you’re visiting Athens then enjoy incredible rooftop views at Athens Style hostel.
South Spain never disappoints and cultural hotspot and beach favourite Malaga is always a good idea. The city’s palm trees and blue skies will make you forget winter so grab a terrace table, some damn good tapas, and relax. A recent renaissance in the art scene here means there are some cool things to see around the city and as Picasso’s birth town, there is of course a great Picasso Museum. It might not be beach weather in winter, but it’s guaranteed to be pretty close!
If you’re staying in Malaga then book your bed at Oasis Backpacker’s Hostel for the most central stay in town – their roof terrace bar is particularly good for sun worshippers!
The island of Rhodes
With a historical old town, colourful buildings and amazing beaches, it’s no wonder that the island of Rhodes is a favourite winter getaway. Greece always delivers on the sunshine and Rhodes has some beautiful sites to visit, as well as plenty of culture and history to keep you busy. The water may be chilly for all the water-sports on offer but it’s a great time of year for windsurfing and a good chance of catching some rays on the beach.
If you’re visiting Rhodes then stay at designer chic Stay Hostel Rhodes. You can enjoy the sunshine on their garden terrace, theme nights or the nearby beach at their centrally located boutique hostel.
Sizzling in the summer, Sevilla also has a lovely winter climate where you can enjoy the Andalusian sunshine on one of the many terrace bars around town. With the smell of orange blossom and of course amazing tapas, this city is a must at any time of year. Explore the Triana neighbourhood, home to Flamenco and the famous operatic Carmen, and walk through the pedestrianised streets of the old town to see the architecture. The huge Gothic cathedral is unmissable as are the old Alcazar and castle complex. Enjoy the pace of life here with plenty of watching the world pass by in their beautiful squares.
If you’re visiting Sevilla then enjoy the vibe at Oasis Palace Backpacker’s Hostel in the centre of town. You’ll be spoiled with their roof top views and cool design.
