Famous Hostels Eurotrip: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam – my hometown and the 6th stop of my month long Famous Hostels Eurotrip!

Amsterdam is a city everyone knows about; the canal houses, bicycles, coffee shops, and amazing nightlife attracts visitors from all around the world to the Dutch capital.

Getting to Amsterdam

I took Eurostar from London to Brussels, and caught another train to Amsterdam – all with my Interrail Global Pass! It was a beautiful journey through northern France and Belgium, and I was especially excited to be back home for a few days!

Amsterdam

Flying Pig Hostel

I stayed at the Flying Pig Uptown – one of the most popular hostels in Amsterdam! And it couldn’t be in a better location – right next to the Vondelpark, Museum Square, and all main tourist sites. My room had a view of the park, and since it was October, the trees were very colourful!

The hostel has a really cool bar and excellent service; you can even WhatsApp reception if you have a question or issue! They also offer daily, free walking tours, among other activities.

My Time in Amsterdam

Since Amsterdam is my home, I decided to just cycle around and catch up with family and friends. But if you’ve ever wanted some local tips for the city, I’ve got you covered!

Start with a Free Walking Tour, which takes you along the canals, famous squares, and the Red Light District. They’ll point out popular museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House. However, they can be expensive so I recommend checking out some smaller ones! Try out the Dutch Resistance Museum or the Amsterdam Museum.

As you may know, the Dutch love cycling! Bicycles are the main way to get around so I recommend trying it! Catch a free ferry to the north of the city and check out this trendy area!

There’s always a party going on, but if you’re lucky enough to be here in October, then I recommend Amsterdam Dance Event! It’s the world’s biggest electronic music festival, with over 300 events and 2,500 DJs over the course of 5 days!

One of the best spots for a drink is Brewery ‘t IJ, where you can try delicious beers under a Dutch windmill. And if you want to see more windmills, catch the train to Zaanse Schans. It’s a beautiful area and only about 20 mins from the city.

There’s also plenty of nice cafes and restaurants all over the city. I recommend trying some of our local deep fried snacks (bitterballen). The nicest areas are the Jordaan’, ‘9 Straatjes’ and the ‘Pijp’.

Goodbye Amsterdam

I had 3 amazing days in Amsterdam and left with a backpack full of clean clothes (thanks mum!). I took the train to Copenhagen and you can read about my time in the Danish capital here.
