1. The Chocolate Line in Bruges

For something sweet in between the beers and the touring take yourself to The Chocolate Line. All the tasty treats in this chocolaterie are made on site, using the finest organic ingredients around. 2. Canal Boat Tours in Bruges

Bruges is a small enough city but like most places with narrow cobbled streets and reasonably tall buildings, it’s easy to get lost. To fix this jump on a boat tour and get your bearings. They start out from the canal just south of Burg Square and all tours pitch up at around the ten euro mark, with mostly multi lingual guides. Canal Boat Tours are definitely one of the top 10 things to do in Bruges!

3. Coffee and Cake at Het Dagelijks Brood

The whiff of fresh bread and desserts that drift out of this place is overpowering and drags you in, whether you like it or not! Inside you can enjoy the company of fellow travellers and city folk all sat on long wooden tables adorned with gigantic blocks of butter, home made jam, an arsenal of freshly baked breads and super sharp coffees. Find this slice of heaven near the Burg on Philipstockstraat.

4. The Choco Story

When you walk in you get a free chocolate, when you walk through you smell the fresh chocolate, at the end you get to watch chocolate being made and on the way out you get more free chocolate. Need we say more? Between cocoa cravings it’s worth sitting through the movie upstairs which narrates the history and production process because refreshingly, this history lesson is by no means stuffy. Step up to the challenge just north of the city centre – on Wijnzakstraat.

5. The Cinema Lumiere in Bruges, for film lovers

If you have a free evening in this city then this is a guaranteed good time. The Cinema Lumiere is an independent picture house without the pretentious price tags. Here you can watch films in a variety of languages and the red velvet seats are a nice plush bonus when you’re on a backpacker budget. 8. The Diamond Museum

Here you can witness a hilariously entertaining polishing session at midday, everyday. The diamond master is Devos Jan and when he’s done scaring the life out of women by pretending to destroy their wedding rings, he’ll teach you everything you need to know about diamonds. The highlight however is the guide’s unabashed account of how those canary cut monstrosities get on the fingers of the rich and famous. Find the museum on Katelijnestraat.

9. Flemish Flavours at the Local Markets in Bruges

For good food don’t miss the market on ‘t Zand. Saturday mornings see the best offers come out to play but if you’re also around on Wednesday mornings then you can have some stall based fun in Markt Square. There’s fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, roasted nuts, wine and more cheese than you can shake a stick at. You should by all means exercise your right to a free sample at every stall and if you go all out, you can pretty much consume your own body weight in a rather diverse range of complimentary tasters!

10. The Groeninge Museum

This staple in the Flemish cultural diet is always abreast of the best exhibits and at around ten Euros per ticket, it won’t wipe out your travel budget. You can find the museum just off Dijver – near the city centre but give it a Google first to see when it’s open and what’s on!
