Rotterdam, a vibrant city
Rotterdam is alive during the year with festivals and events connected with arts, culture, sports and music. The city is been awarded “Events city of the Netherlands” twice and with good reason. Also, Rotterdam is in the Lonely Planet list best in travel 2016!’ There’s the International Film Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Kingsday, Motel Mozaique, The Flying Dutch, World Port Days, the Rotterdam Marathon and many more. Besides all the architecture, festivals and clubbing you can also indulge yourself in the cultural urban scene, with lots of art galleries, markets, museums, bars, coffeeshops, music venues, shopping and so on.
1. Rent a bike!
Rotterdam was bombed into devastation during the Second World War and has been one of the great success stories in their vision and gradual reconstruction. It’s a thoroughly modern city and its horizon is taken over by jutting angles and glass facades. Bridges cross over and back the River Maas and modernist statues are around every corner.
We always recommend other people to take a bike to explore Rotterdam. We really believe that you can see so much more of a city when riding a bike than by foot or using public transportation. By bike is the easiest way to see all the amazing parts of the city.
For only €10.- you rent a bike at Hostel ROOM!
Rotterdam also plays host to some amazing festivals, so if you’re lucky enough to visit Rotterdam at the right time, or if you time your visit to be there for one of these then you’re in for a real treat.

Rotterdam has never been classed as one of Europe’s most classically beautiful cities, but things are starting to change quickly. Rotterdam is a multicultural melting pot, and you can see this in all areas of life in the city; from the faces that pass you in the rush hour to work, to the restaurants that line the bustling streets in the evening.
4. See the city from the water
Rotterdam is still the biggest Port of Europe! So a visit to this impressing Harbour shouldn’t been missed! The Spido boat tour (which leaves 2 minutes away from the hostel), takes you into the harbour for 75 minutes, is actually the only way to get you so close to the action(huge containerships & industry). Also you could take a watertaxi! For only €4,50 per person you can enjoy this fund and quick boat ride.
Not to miss on your Architecture tour of Rotterdam: Hotel New York and ‘Manhattan at the Maas’, Deliplein, Katendrecht and SS Rotterdam, the Kralingse Bos Area, the Delfshaven area, the Market and it’s beautiful Market Hall, the Old Harbour, Meent & Pancakestreet, the North Area, Zwaanshals and North Square.
6. Staffs Favourites
Go to Blaak Market on Tuesday and Saturdays. It’s one of the biggest outside markets of Europe. Try some typical Dutch snacks like: kibbeling, stroopwafel or old cheese. Or find some retro second hand clothes. Up for some cooking? Then buy cheap fruits and vegetables!
On Wednesday Night they play live jazz music in Bird. Nice atmosphere and music. Are you more the Karaoke kind of person? Go to BAR.! Every Wednesday Karaoke night! Nothing to do on a Monday Night? Join the BINGO in the Irish Pub from midnight.
For artlovers there are some amazing museums in Rotterdam. We prefer Boijmans Museum and Kunsthal. Expositions change every couple of months.
