Interlaken is the tenth stop of my one-month Famous Hostels Eurotrip!
There is this one place in Europe that’s a paradise for everyone. It’s a little fairy tale village in the middle of two magical lakes, surrounded by the snowy tops of the Swiss Alps where you’ll find cute churches with waterfalls in the background. It felt like I was at some kind of film set but I was actually in Interlaken.
From Vienna I took the train into Switzerland with Interrail Global Pass. We crossed all of Austria and half of Switzerland and -as you can imagine- the view was breathtaking. We drove through the most beautiful cities and little towns, high up in the mountains and next to lakes. I had some of the best views I have ever had from the train.
In the evening they open their “wintergarden” where you can try the local beers and the delicious Swiss cheese fondue (this is a must try when you’re there, the winter garden is so nice and the guys working there are the friendliest and funniest people!).
In Interlaken I stayed at Balmer’s Hostel, a place known by travellers from all over the world. The hostel looked even better than you expect any house in Switzerland to look like, a Swiss chalet with flowers, a beautiful garden with hammocks, a hot tub and views over the most incredible mountains.
As soon as I walked into the hostel I noticed the many nationalities staying there, as I said before, Switzerland is a country that has something for everyone. Interlaken is known as an outdoor heaven, as you can go paragliding, rafting, do some of world’s best hikes (there are 429 hiking trails to choose from) and you can even go skiing in winter. In case you’re not much of an outdoor person you can do the famous chocolate workshop, visit spas with the most stunning views or go for an amazing night out in the club under the hostel. These are just a selection of the countless things to do around the area.
However, I did something even more exciting. I took the train up to the Top of Europe, a place surrounded by glaciers and eternal snow. At 3454 metres above sea level it’s the highest train station in Europe and honestly, the views are insane!
You can walk through the snow, even go inside the glacier and see frozen works of art. It’s (literally) the highlight of my trip and since Interlaken is located in the middle of Europe I would recommend everyone to include it in his or her Eurotrip itinerary. Another really cool thing you can do is to visit another mountain (Schilthorn) where you can do the Thrill Walk. This is a walk on a see-through path on the cliffs. However, since I had only two days I decided to spend one of the days exploring the town, lakes and waterfalls around Interlaken.
Only a couple of train stops away from Interlaken is a little town called Lauterbrunnen. Here you can find a very impressive valley that could literally be a painting.
The town is at the start of this valley that has a total of 72 waterfalls (some are several hundred metres high!). I visited the Staubbach Falls where you can do a small hike through the mountain and actually stand behind the falls. It’s so beautiful! After visiting the waterfalls I went back to Interlaken to see Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, both right next to the town. Unfortunately it was a cold day and I could only imagine how nice it would be to jump into the blue water in summer time and to visit the fisherman’s villages around the lake. Hence, I decided I will go back in summer to do the hikes, swim in the lakes and visit more of the gorgeous mountains. I might even go back this winter already to check out the slopes.
After two of the nicest days I packed my backpack again and caught the train to Spain! I went to the beautiful city of Barcelona, where I am now. I will write more about my time there soon. In the mean time make sure to check out Balmer’s Hostel and plan your trip to Switzerland!
