On rainy days in Rotterdam you’ll have no shortage of cool and interesting activities to do while staying dry. Aside from loads of museums, galleries, cinemas, and cosy cafes, there are more things to check out in this port city when the weather isn’t cooperating. So don’t worry, just get your umbrella ready and check out these unusual gems to explore. You’ll soon be singing in the rain!
1. Eat your way around Markthal
This food mecca is a delicious rainy day activity in Rotterdam! Markthal has over 90 food stalls to taste a variety of treats to get stuffed on, all without having to hold up an umbrella. Come rain or shine, the food here is worth exploring. And it’s not just delicious Dutch food; there’s also international food widely available. While here you should definitely try some kibbeling (Dutch style fried fish) and pofferjes (similar to pancakes, but better). In fact, the best place in Rotterdam for them is next door at Poffertjessalon Seth, but you might get wet!
2. Take a ride in the Spido
If you’re going to get wet anyway then what better place to do it than in a boat flying around the River Maas!? Taking a ride on The Spido is great whatever the weather, and for a 75 minute boat ride for less than 14€, it’s easy on the wallet. Plus, you get to see all the awesome architecture the city has to offer from the waterfront, including the famous Erasmus Bridge and all the port from the water. A unique activity for a rainy day!
3. Get inside one of the famous Cube Houses
These Instagram favs are totally great from the outside (who doesn’t love a wonky bright yellow house at a 45 degree angle?), but there’s also a much drier place to observe Piet Blom’s finest architecture on a rainy day– from the inside. The Cube Houses (Kijk-Kubus) are iconic architectural landmarks in Rotterdam and fortunately one is a Museum-House. Check out the bizarre interior, inspired by abstract art and modern urban planning. The Kijk-Kubus Museum-house is open every day from 10am to 6pm (except holidays).
4. Gin Tasting in Schiedam
It’s always time for a gin somewhere in the world, and when better to do it than on a rainy day. Just a short metro ride from Rotterdam is Schiedam – a network of historic warehouses on the waterways and the world’s tallest windmill. Here you’ll be tasting delicious gins while learning some interesting facts about 300 years of distilling history at the National Jenever Museum Schiedam. If you fancy another tipple then pop into the 325 year old Nolet Distillery for a vodka; it’s the towering home of Ketel One.
5. The Dutch Pinball Museum
This lesser known museum in Rotterdam is a big hit, and an awesome rainy day activity. If you’re a fan of classic pinball, you’re going to love this place! Not only is it stuff of childhood dreams – you can actually play on the machines. Seriously! 80 of the 100 pinball machines exhibited can be played on. So it’s basically like the coolest arcade from way back when.
