A Bit of History on Cabanyal

Known formally as El Cabanyal, it’s an historical fisherman’s village, and the most unique area of the city. Filled with interesting and colourful buildings, this cherished neighbourhood is also known as Valencia’s, ‘Little Havana’. And it’s a deserving nickname as it’s rather reminiscent of parts of Havana in Cuba.

While El Cabanyal has always been more or less a residential area, its existence was threatened by a development project in the early 2000s. For years, the people of Cabanyal, and historical preservation groups fought to preserve their beloved district. And their hard work eventually paid off! Cabanyal was granted historical status by the city of Valencia and has thrived as a cultural hot spot ever since.

So what about the nickname ‘Little Havana’? Throughout the quarter, you can spot elderly men smoking cigars, grandmothers watching their grandchildren play, and laundry hanging from the balconies. Cabanyal is now home to a young and creative scene, making it the perfect spot to spend a day wandering around. In 2020, The Guardian named Cabanyal one of Europe’s coolest neighbourhoods.

Explore the Architecture

As we’ve already mentioned, Cabanyal is a colourful neighbourhood, and its architecture is stunning. Down nearly every street, you’ll find buildings in a variety of dreamy colours. Cabanyal is also a hot spot of art nouveau tile work, which covers many of the facades in the area. Our favourite street to explore is Calle de la Reina as it’s full of beautiful buildings, colours, and tiles. If you’re looking for an Instagram-worthy backdrop, you’ll find tons of them here!

Indulge in Local Foods

Valencia has an impressive local food scene, and Canabyal is no exception! The most famous dish here is Paella, and the options to indulge in Cabanyal are plentiful. No matter where you roam, you’ll be serenaded by the sound of people eating, drinking, and socialising in the tapas bars and on the street. Our top recommendation for tapas bars is Casa Montaña, where you can indulge in some delectable dishes. The interior is a special treat if you’ve admired the famous tile work in the area. And don’t be shy to try to order in Spanish! The locals love the effort!

Check Out the Street Art

For those who love and appreciate art de la rue, Cabanyal will certainly keep you happy. Valencia as a whole welcomes street art, but the pieces in this quarter are something special. Most of the pieces act as a commentary on the political struggles between the local government and the people, which can still be felt today. You can find pieces from artists like Hyuro, Ericailcane, XLF Collective, and Fran Bosoletti.

Visit the Markets

If you plan on spending a day in Cabanyal, then you absolutely have to visit the markets! With its history as a former fishing village, you can purchase fresh catch everyday! But it doesn’t stop there; stalls filled with local fruits, vegetables, cheese, and sweets await you. The buzzing atmosphere is enough to make a visit to the Cabanyal Market worth it!

Head to the Beach

Sitting behind Playa Las Arenas, and near Playa de la Malvarrosa, Cabanyal is perfectly situated for you to spend some time at the beach. Known for its sandy shores and warm water, Valencia is a popular spot for beach-goers. And given Cabanyal’s fishing history, it would only make sense to spend some time in the water, right?! Just don’t forget to pack your sun lotion!
