Rainy days, scarfs, and hot coffee — wondering what we’re talking about? October, of course! As we say goodbye to summer, don’t fret about being limited in travelling – the cities are ready and waiting for us in this colourful, seasonal change. And Dresden is no different! What to See in Dresden in Autumn

Dresden is one of the biggest cities in the former East Germany, and is famous for its stunning & impressive architecture, whimsical Christmas markets, and classical music. The two largest districts in Dresden are Neustadt and Altstadt, and luckily you can find almost everything here! It should be noted that Dresden was entirely destroyed in WWII, so most of what you seen in the city centre today is a reconstruction. Nevertheless, it doesn’t take away from the city’s charm.

What to See in Dresden Altstadt

Residenzschloss

One of the most popular attractions in the Altstadt is the Residenzschloss (or Royal Palace). A former residence to Saxon royalty, it is now home to the historical Green Vault, the Kupferstich-Kabinett. The Kupferstich-Kabinett collection began sometime in the 16th century, making it the oldest museums for works of art on paper in the German-speaking world. This is certainly a great way to spend a few hours in Dresden in Autumn.

Zwinger

This is the other hugely popular attraction in Dresden’s Altstadt. Zwinger is a large Baroque building from the 18th century, housing the picture gallery of old masters. Like Residenzschloss, visiting the museum is a great activity in Dresden, especially in Autumn.

Semperoper

Right around the corner from Residenzschloss and Zwinger, you can find Semperoper (Dresden Opera House). It’s an architectural masterpiece and a worthy place for Instagram shots! View it from the outside, but if you want to see the interior, you’ll have to book a guided tour or go to a performance.

Fürstenzug

One of my favourites was the Fürstenzug, an oversized mural in honour of the Wettins, who were Saxony’s ruling family in the Middle Ages. You can find the mural on the side of the Stallhof at Schlossplatz. It consists of 24,000 Meissen porcelain tiles and measures 102 meters!

Frauenkirche

This is probably the most iconic landmark in Dresden. The church’s history dates back at least 1000 years, but underwent an impressive Baroque renovation in the 18th century. However, the Frauenkirche was completely destroyed on February 15, 1945 after the Bombing of Dresden in WWII. In 1994, the Frauenkirche rebuild began and finally opened in 2005. It’s marvellous from the inside and is totally worth waiting in the long line – an absolute must-see!

Brühlsche Terrasse

Alongside the Elbe, you can find Brühlsche Terrasse, which is a great place to get a fantastic view of Dresden and take a break from all the walking. Think this is just another terrace in Europe? It’s believed Johan Wolfgang von Goethe once said that this was the terrace of Europe.

Dresden Steam Boat

If you’re in Dresden in Autumn, chances are you’ll experience some cold and windy weather. One of the best things to do is take a ride on one of the world’s oldest steam boats down the Elbe! Grab a cup of tea cup of tea and enjoy a cruise while learning about castles and vineyards in Dresden.

What to See in Dresden Neustadt

When I think of Neustadt, I think of Berlin. If you’ve ever visited Berlin’s Neustadt, you’ll know what I mean. Neustadt stands out from other parts of Dresden and you notice right away. Colourful graffiti, and unique, independent shops characterise it, but what stands out the most are the younger people. And for the film fans, try and catch a flick at Schauberg!

While it’s known for it’s trendiness and alternative culture, you should also visit Albertplatz to see some beautiful fountains, as well as the Goldener Reiter at Neustädter Markt.

Pfundsmolkerei – Neustadt

The Guinness Book of World Records calls Pfundsmolkerei the most beautiful dairy shop in the world, and is certainly worth a visit! The interiors done in a neo-Renaissance style, and dates back to 1880. If you’re looking for a cool souvenir from your time in Dresden, this could be the place to get it!

Kunsthofpassage – Neustadt

Neustadt has been home to many artists for quite some time now, and over time that time, the Kunsthofpassage developed. It’s a collection of alleyways and patios in the heart of outer Neustadt. While strolling around, you’ll find many little shops and galleries, displaying artwork on the facades. Make sure you also check out the singing drainpipes, a collection of pipes which make music when it rains! If you’re in Dresden in Autumn, there’s a good chance you’ll get to hear it, too!

Where to Eat & Drink in Dresden

Altmarkt is home to many cafés and restaurants, and is the perfect place to try a variety of things! While here, be sure to try a Dresden classic, the Eierschecke – a sweet and delicious cake.

As stated earlier, Neustadt is the liveliest neighbourhood in Dresden, and is also home to the best places to eat and drink! If you’re looking for something different and sweet, check out the Schokoladenbar, a chocolate lovers dream.

Another market option is the Neustädter Market Hall. Grab a nice coffee and some snacks for your journey!

Dresden and Nature

If you’re feeling burnt out from museums and landmarks, Dresden has you covered! Known for its parks, two-thirds of Dresden is dedicated to green space, so you’re never far from nature!

The Rose Garden is one of the first places you should check out. Typically, visiting Dresden in Autumn would mean you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the impressive display of roses (there are over 1000!), but with climate chance impacting our seasons, chances are you’ll still be able to see some while there.

Next to the Altstadt, you can visit Dresden’s biggest park called Großer Garten. It’s the perfect spot for a bike ride, a nice jog, or a relaxing walk – whatever suits you! The park is also home to a beautiful mosaic fountain I encourage you to find!

Where to Stay in Dresden

I stayed at Hostel Mondpalast – a short 5 min train ride from the main station. Mondpalast means ‘moon palace’ in English, so this plays a theme within the hostel. All the rooms are inspired by astrology signs, and I personally stayed in the Libra room.

Hostel Mondpalast is colourful and welcoming, and will make you feel at home. Located in the trendy Neustadt, it’s also within close proximity to all the main attractions. They also offer free coffee, which is perfect for a quick warm up after a day wandering around Dresden in Autumn.
