Being a genuine backpacker means acting and buying like a local by interacting with the community to get a unique and real Porto experience! This is what happens during the “Tapas and Vinho Verde Experience” food tour. It’s organized by Porto Walkers and definitely has the Cats Hostel seal of approval!
We’ll keep it familiar and intimate as we always like it! With a group maximum of 11 people (which is a very small group size in this mass tourism world), we´ll begin at the commercial heart of Porto, the Temporary Bolhão Market. Here we’ll meet people talking with a strong, firm, and direct voice. We do not expect you to like them, but don’t worry because they already like themselves! It’s an attitude that shouts “Porto”. ?
Here, you will taste tomatoes from local orchards, wines made with Portuguese hands, tapas like “iscas de bacalhau”, and the famous bread “broa de Avintes“, which was formerly peasants’ bread that is now a traditional staple on every table.
From this mythical place, we’ll head on over to cafes marked with history of the city and then, to more contemporary but still authentic places. This is where you´ll try the best “pastel de Nata” in Porto, for instance.
But the tour does not end without trying a few more risky things like “papas de sarrabulho” or “orelha de porco”, accompanied by green wine, of course, because a good wine cannot be missing on the Portuguese table. As the tour is focused on “vinho verde” (traditional Portuguese table wine), don´t even think about to trying to skip out on this. No need to say you have to come with an empty stomach, right??
This is an experience that will bring you close to locals in the most typical and beloved places and immerse you in the flavors of a Porto whose food was defined by an incredible history.
