Salzbourg, Autriche

Situated on the main route between Munich and Vienna, the city is famous for more than The Sound of Music, Mozart, and Red Bull. Salzburg is one of our favourite destinations for skiing and snowboarding in central Europe. Between Christmas and March there is a daily free snow shuttle taking you to several of Salzburg’s mountain resorts. SnowSpace Salzburg consists of 3 mountains, and several runs to choose from. If you’re a total beginner to skiing or snowboarding, this is actually the perfect place for you to get started!

Where to Stay in Salzburg

If you’re visiting Salzburg book your bed at the long standing Auberge de jeunesse internationale de Yoho – right in the centre of town and with an awesome late night bar and spacious rooms. The staff are very familiar with the region, and can help you with any information you’ll need while in Salzburg.

The world famous Alps can also be seen from Munich, so this is a great destination for skiing or snowboarding in central Europe. You’ll have to travel a bit outside in order to hit the slopes, but we promise it’s worth it.

From November until April, you can visit Garmisch Patenkirchen which is about 1,5 hours outside Munich. With 2 ski resorts and over 60 kilometres of slopes, all your winter sport dreams will be fulfilled! In fact, Garmisch Patenkirchen is home to Germany’s largest mountain, so you know you’re in for some quality runs.

Matten/Interlaken, Switzerland

Any guide to skiing and snowboarding in central Europe would be incomplete without mentioning Switzerland. Interlaken is one of our favourite Swiss destinations and is situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Swiss Alps. If you’re looking for a unique destination for your winter sports getaway, this is it.

Accessing the slopes from Interlaken and Matten couldn’t be easier. Just hop on the train in town and travel 2,000m up (6,500 ft) and ski the world-famous mountains, including Eiger, Jungfrau and Moench. The heights will make you feel like you’re on a different planet.

Our top recommendation for accommodation in Interlaken is Balmers Hostel! Since 1907, Balmers has been hosting a variety of guests from around the world and leaving them all with great impressions. From dorm rooms, to private room, and even tent options in Summer, Balmers has it all. Spend your days in the nature, and your evenings in their common areas, outdoor hot tub, or their popular club.
