The Fallas of València Festival is an annual event where Valèncians ring in the Spring season. The festival starts on March 1st, and runs until March 19th. Over the two and a half week period, the city explodes with events, parties, ninots, and parades, giving València new life after the sleepy winter months. Looking for info and some hot tips on this lively festival? Read on to discover our guide on How to Celebrate The Fallas of València Festival.

Background on The Fallas of València Festival

The Fallas is a traditional event in honour of Saint Joseph, and celebrates the arrival of Spring. Added to UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage of Humanity List in 2016, the festival is characterised with fires, and you’ll be able to experience tons of them! The term “fallas” is from the Latin word “fax”, meaning torch, and refers to both the ninots and the celebrations. While Las Fallas is a two and a half week festival, the key days are March 15-19.

Historically, The Fallas of València Festival was an annual event where carpenters would burn old wood used to prop up their lights in the winter months. Over time, other items were added to the annual fire, sometimes giving them a an almost human appearance. Today, you’ll find upwards of 800 incredible pieces of art depicting real-life characters or statements, all meant to be burned at some point during the festival. The ninots always have a satirical, political, or topical theme, so don’t be surprised if you see things that look like Trump, Lady Gaga, or Homer Simpson.
