From Rotterdam to Amsterdam – Hostel Staff Swap

Posted at:5 June, 2018 in Blog, Hostel Staff Swap

Hi! I’m Angela and currently working for Hostel ROOM Rotterdam.

I was happy to go on the Europe Famous Hostel’s Staff Swap and I chose to go to Amsterdam for two nights. It’s quite close, only a 40 minutes train ride from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, but the cities are very different to each other. While Rotterdam is very modern and cool, Amsterdam is cute and flabbergasting. Find out my experience of Amsterdam in this blog.

Hostel Flying Pig Uptown

On the 24th of April I took my bike to Rotterdam Centraal and the train to Amsterdam. Within an hour I was in front of the backpackers hostel the Flying Pig Uptown. The location is great, right next to Vondelpark, close to the famous I AMsterdam letters, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum.

Inside the hostel the staff are always smiling and very open to their guests. I received a warm welcome and a big hug from my ex-colleague who showed me the indoor ‘Smoking Area’ where other people were enjoying a smoke. After that one of the staff members showed me the hostel and a couple of dorms.

Check-in time! The check-in is very easy. From 11am people can check in to their rooms, drop their bags off and enjoy the city. I dropped my bag in a very nice and clean 6-bed mixed dorm with private bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and during my stay I slept like a baby (and was lucky to sleep with 5 non-snoring guys!)

Lunchtime

I arrived around lunchtime and one of the staff recommended the Foodhallen. I was curious about this place, as they are planning to open one in Rotterdam as well. Foodhallen was a great place with amazing food, but it was a bit expensive if you’re on a budget.

Amsterdam city centre

After my belly was full with food and a glass of wine, I went to the city centre. I knew the city from previously but it’s still an incredible experience to walk around. It’s very lively with tourists taking pictures of beautiful canals, historical buildings and the Dam Square. Some try out the ‘coffeeshops’ and nightlife. People have been asking me many times if you can also smoke in the rest of the Netherlands: Yes! But it’s not as obvious as in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Noord

I like to experience the local way of living, so I rented a bike from the hostel and went to the North. Amsterdam Noord is easy (and free) to reach by ferry. Noord is a very unique area with a lot of street art, cultural activities and stylish waterside hangouts with beautiful terraces.

Hostel fun and facilities

I attended the quiz night, drank a few beers and got to know the staff. I joined a quiz team of other travellers and we ended up winning a pitcher of Sex on the beach! Lekker and gezellig!

After days of exploring the city, I also experienced what was it like to stay in the Flying Pig Uptown. It’s a very relaxed and funky atmosphere and good for making new travel friends, as they have a bar and lots of activities organized. There are walking tours, beer pong nights, pub quizzes and daily happy hour. I felt really at home with, because these are all similar to the activities we run at Hostel Room.

Breakfast

The breakfast in the Flying Pig Uptown is very good. It includes bread, cereals, fresh fruit, juice and eggs! The music they play makes you ready and happy for a new day!

Unfortunately I had to check out and travel back to Rotterdam. But I would love to thank the Flying Pig Uptown staff for having me. I really enjoyed my stay and you guys are all welcome in Rotterdam!
