Guide to Christmas Markets in Salzburg
Christmas markets in Europe look like a scene directly out of an old fashioned Christmas story book, and Salzburg does not disappoint!
Known as the birthplace of Mozart and the home of The Sound of Music, Salisburgo is a popular destination year round, and their Christmas markets will put anybody in the holiday spirit. Nestled in the Alps, Salzburg is one of the best places to start your Christmas celebrations in Europa. And it’s not a bad place to hit the slopes before the Holiday, either. The city ignites with holiday cheer, so check out our Guide to Christmas Markets in Salzburg!
The first rule of thumb for the Christmas markets in Salzburg is to dress warm. We really want to emphasise that. The winter months in Salzburg can be frigid, especially to those not accustomed to real winter temperatures. However, you’ll quickly warm up with a cup or two of glühwein!
It’s important to note that the Christmas markets typically begin at the end of November, and run until December 24th, although some exceptions apply. Your best bet is to ask the receptionists at your hostel for information on the markets you want to attend.
And lastly, make sure you bring cash to the Christmas markets in Salzburg. While you might have the option to pay with card on some of the more expensive items, you likely won’t if you end up going just for the food and drinks. So save yourself the hassle and bring cash!
Christmas Markets in Salzburg
This is considered the main Christmas market in Salzburg and is located in the historic Alt Stadt. The charming stalls and Christmas spirit here will surely whisk you away to a Holiday Wonderland. You’ll find a variety of locally produced crafts, food, and drink, and we definitely recommend indulging in a cup of glühwein! For those who don’t know, it’s mulled wine, and is a staple item at Christmas markets across German speaking countries.
If you’d rather avoid the big crowds, then we recommend the Christmas market at Mirabellplatz. You’ll find the same tasty treats and beautiful crafts, but you’ll find way more locals here. It’s located on the opposite side of the river as the Alt Stadt, and is perfectly situated whether you’re arriving by transit, by car, or on foot.
For some extra charming, we recommend heading to the Salzburg Fortress Christmas Market. Located in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress, you’ll fall in love with the decor and feeling here, and you’ll also get the chance to take in lots of great Christmas music performed by local talent and ensembles.
Stern Advent & Winter Market
If you happen to miss out on the Christmas festivities in Salzburg, no worries! The Stern Advent and Winter Market runs from November until to early January, and offers visitors a charming atmosphere in the middle of the Alt Stadt. It’s one of Salzburg’s newer Christmas markets, so it certainly attracts a different crowd than the main one.
Other Christmas Events in Salzburg
It’s not just all about the Christmas markets in Salzburg. There are plenty of other festive events you can attend to fill your holiday with cheer.
For those who consider themselves fans of ‘The Sound of Music‘, you’ll recognise this location at St. Peter’s Abbey from the film. At Christmas, they set up a Winterwonderland, which runs from mid November until January 6th.
Do you like to sing? Then we encourage you to join a choir open to singers from the public in an Advent Sing-Along. It happens every Tuesday from 6 – 8 p.m, and don’t be shy! Locals love to get involved and see tourists also participating.
Salzburg also has a pretty solid history with music, and you can check out some traditional wind music performed high above the main square every Thursday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. And for a family friendly activity, head to the main market at Residenzplatz for the Children’s reading with the “Christ Child”. It happens every Wednesday at 4 p.m.
