About Team Margot
Team Margot encourages people worldwide to register as bone marrow, organ, or stem cell donors. Team Margot started in the UK in an effort to find a donor for 14 month old Margot. She was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer, and due to her mixed heritage, finding a match was difficult. Sadly, despite the donation and efforts, Margot passed away due to her aggressive cancer.
The foundation still works to bring awareness to the cause, as there are over 36,000 people worldwide still in need of a donation. You can learn more about at teammargot.com.
“Europe’s Famous Hostels partnership with Team Margot builds upon the relationship that first began with one of EFH’s members, St Christopher’s Inns.”, tells Yaser Martini, Margot’s father and founder of the Foundation.
The aim is to match donations as quickly as possible to save the lives of those in need. The more people who join, the more likely patients will find a match! Currently, there are around 80 stem cell registries in over 50 countries.
“As something that impacted one of our community members, Famous Hostels had to get involved. That’s why we joined Team Margot Foundation to help spread the word and hopefully help save lives.”, stated Rui Magro Correia the General Manager of EFH.
Yaser states, “every 35 seconds, someone in the world is diagnosed with blood cancer; for many, a bone marrow transplant is their only chance of survival. However, before this can happen the patient must first be matched with a donor with the same tissue type”
There is an urgent need for people to register as potential bone marrow donors, particularly those with a mixed heritage, or from Black, Asian, or minority ethnic communities. As with Margot’s case, finding a match with a mixed background can be challenging, which is why we want to bring awareness to this issue.
“A patient only needs one donor. You might be the only one who can save their life.”, adds Yaser.
