Ein Kerem

First up on our list of 10 non touristy things to do in Jerusalem is a visit to Ein Kerem. What was once an ancient village outside Jerusalem is now one of the cities best kept secrets. Locals prefer this neighbourhood as it offers an escape from the bustling tourist hot spots. Ein Kerem is known for its beautiful surrounding landscape, and is the birthplace of John the Baptist. Come and lose yourself in this charming and homey neighbourhood!

Montefiore Windmill, Yemin Moshe

The alleys and shops in this neighbourhood are enticing to explore and wander through. Montefiore was built in the 1890s to help with the overpopulation in the Old City and was the first Jewish neighbourhood outside the walls. The Montefiore Windmill is also a spot worth checking out and is a pretty sold non-touristy thing to do in Jerusalem. It’s visible from all over the city and stands out as a landmark, so maybe it’s also a great place for an Instagram shot?

Nachlaot Neighbourhood

Nachlaot stands out because of its twisty roads and hidden courtyards, and is easily the most popular place to live in Jerusalem. The stone houses found throughout the neighbourhood were built in the 1870’s by Jews looking for a quieter life away from the city centre. Although there are only around 100 left now, this neighbourhood also used to have the most synagogues in Jerusalem. The smell of food and the sound of laughter will be enough to attract you to visit!

Valley of the Cross

This valley is the perfect place for a picnic and offers incredible views, especially at sunset. The Valley of the Cross is located next to Gan Sacher, Jerusalem’s largest public park, so finding it is rather easy. The Israel Museum and the Knesset are also nearby, which are great places to learn about Israel’s history. Both locations overlook the valley, with the neighborhood of Rehavia in the east.

Helena’s Well

You’ve surely heard of the Chiesa del Sacro Sepolcro, but this isn’t where we’re sending you. Just above this church there’s a tiny monastery which is often missed by tourists. Hidden inside the monastery, you’ll find a door and several stairs which leads to Helena’s Well.

St. Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, and the first person to find the place where Jesus was crucified and buried. Researchers say the St. Helena built the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and used the water from this well. While the church is free to visit, you’ll need permission and give a small donation in order to visit the well. We promise it’s worth it!

The First Station

Everything you desire is at the First Station, and it’s one of our favourite non-touristy things to do in Jerusalem. Here you’ll find a variety of cuisine and dining options, art, and even concerts! It’s family-friendly, but attracts all different types of crowds, so it’s really a place for everyone. Don’t miss out on their open markets where you can buy anything from jewellery to fresh cheese.

Little Western Wall

You’ve also probably heard of the Western Wall, and know it’s one of the most popular Holy landmarks to visit in Jerusalem’s Old City. If you want to avoid the dense crowds, but still see this landmark, it’s possible! The Little Western Wall is a continuation of it and is located near the gate to the Temple Mount. Some religious locals say this small section of wall is even Holier than the other, more visited parts. And unlike the main Western Wall, men and women do not have to separate while touching the Little Western Wall.

Jerusalem Cinematheque

Passionate about old films? Then Jerusalem Cinematheque is the place for you! This cinema shows both classics and new Hollywood films, and with great seating and marvellous sound, it’s arguably the best cinema in Jerusalem. They also host the Jerusalem Film Festival in summer, which lasts a week and attracts food vendors, live music, and more. It’s another one of our favourite non-touristy things to do in Jerusalem.

Jachnun Bar

When visiting Jerusalem, trying Yemenite cuisine is an absolute must. Jachnun Bar offers something for everyone, even if you’re vegan! They’re open 24/7, with two different locations, so it’s an easily accessible option if you’re feeling hungry. The atmosphere is friendly and homey, making the experience that much more memorable. Give it a try; everyone raves about it!

Reshta

A slightly newer restaurant located outside of Jerusalem, Reshta gives visitors a taste of authentic Arab cuisine. The chef’s garden is adjacent to the restaurant so he often uses these vegetables in the dishes. Guests know exactly where their food comes from at this farm to table establishment. There are numerous options for all diets as well, so give it a try!
