Leaving Naples head across the bay to the beautiful volcanic island of Ischia. Just one hour by ferry from Naples, Ischia lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea and is famous for its thermal spas, volcanic springs and natural beauty. The island has both stunning natural beaches and fantastic hikes as well as historic sites such as the Aragonese Castle, Gardens of La Mortella & Villa Ravino and Villa La Colombaia. Don’t miss the amazing local wine (it’s strong – beware!) and succulent sea food. The island is also known as the better looking big sister of the famous Capri and a great place to make your home when exploring Amalfi, Sorrento or Capri. An ideal location to base yourself for nearby day trips, you can take the boat to neighbouring Capri and Procida, or explore the island’s sites. There is so much to see here from Ancient Roman ruins to the Pope’s pad in the Vatican. Don’t miss St. Peter’s square, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican museums – be prepared to queue… And of course, stretch your neck to get a good look at the most famous ceiling – “The Last Judgment” by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.
For an exploration of Ancient Rome, head to the impressive Colosseum (just like in The Gladiator), visit the Roman forum, Palatine Hill, Capitoline Hill, Circus Maximus, and Pantheon. You can walk around them all – fortify yourself with some ice cream on the way at one of the many gelaterias. For Renaissance Rome then visit hte Spanish Steps and wander through the many piazzas and of course visit the Trevi Fountain – It’s just like in La Dolce Vita! Finish off with some traditional Roman thin crust pizza, or the local delicious pasta – Bucatini all’Amatriciana. Delicious!

From Rome head east over to the sunny Adriatic Coast. Rimini is the heart and capital of the Romagna region, surrounded by hills and famous for its beautiful sandy beaches – it has over 15km of them! Rimini isn’t just known for its golden beaches and nightlife, its also an artistic city know for many Roman and Renaissance monuments including the Arch of Augustus and the Tiberius Bridge. A tourist boom town, Rimini’s stretches of sand and the beautiful scenery of the Adriatic coast attract plenty of visitors each year, meaning there’s plenty of parties and clubs to enjoy in the evenings and beach activities in the day time. There’s kite surfing, canoeing and wind surfing as well as paddle boarding and jet ski hire. The historic centre is full of history and there’s also great shopping and of course, being Italy, amazing food! Rimini is also home to famous film director Federico Fellini – try a bit of La Dolce Vita!
