Zachęta Gallery

Located behind a square rainbow (a piece by Marek Sobczyk called ‘Simple Rainbow’) you’ll find the Zachęta Gallery, one of the most popular contemporary museums in Warsaw. The name itself means “encouragement” and is meant to inspire young artists to explore and create art.

The permanent collection contains more than 6000 pieces, which includes paintings, videos, installations, sculptures, and photographs. The gallery hosts several exhibitions as well, so check out their page before visiting to see what’s going on.

Ujazdowski Castle

You can find this Centre for Contemporary Art in the beautiful Ujazdowski Park and is one of the top art galleries in Warsaw. Filled with variety of exhibitions, you can easily spend half a day browsing the collections. Aside from contemporary art, you can check out performances and classic films, and also participate in art workshops.

Museum on the Vistula

The Museum on the Vistula is one of our favourite art galleries in Warsaw. This museum is located on the Vistula River, and next to the Copernicus Science Centre and the University of Warsaw Library. And we feel it’s a must see for all lovers of contemporary art. The entire facade is a piece of art itself, and was created by Sławomir Pawszak. So even if you don’t have time to visit the inside, you can appreciate the art from the outside. If you happen to be here in the warmer months and fancy a glass of wine, make sure to visit the bar next door!

National Museum

Not everything in Warsaw is only about contemporary art. We recommend visiting the National Museum to get a look at some of the most outstanding Polish art over time. Their collection starts in the Middle Ages and features items to the contemporary art period. You can also see unique monuments of Nubian art discovered by a Polish archaeologist Kazimierz Michałowski. In addition to permanent exhibitions, there are temporary exhibitions based on art of various regions and periods. The National Museum is definitely worth seeing!

Królikarnia

If you’re more into the underground art scene, then the Królikarnia is the place you want to check out. This low-key place is a perfect destination for those looking to take in some art at a more relaxed pace. Placed in a picturesque park which shares the name of the gallery, Królikarnia is also a great place to grab a coffee and just walk around in nature.

Ethnographic Museum

While this isn’t technically an art gallery, we think everyone should pay a visit to the Ethnographic Museum. It showcases the best parts of Polish heritage, and offers insight into the country prior to WWII. Housing both permanent and temporary exhibitions, it’s a great place to gain perspective on the country’s history. You can see collections of traditional crafts, clothes, inventions, furniture and art, or visit one of many special events organised here.

Neon Museum

Last but not least on our guide to the top art galleries in Warsaw is the Neon Museum. It’s actually the biggest in Europe, so it’s certainly worth a visit. It’s located in Praga’s arts complex Soho Factory, and is also a fairly popular destination for those coveted Instagram shots. The purpose of this museum is to document and showcase the Cold War era in Poland and it’s use of neon light advertisements. This is an important symbol of the Polish People’s Republic and provides visitors with an interesting perspective into this difficult era.
