Viktualienmarkt

Looking to get a bite to eat, or pick up items for a picnic? Then we recommend heading to Viktualienmarket! It’s easily the most popular outdoor market in Munich, home to over 140 stands serving a variety of foods and drinks. In fact, one of the best beer gardens in Munich is also here, so we imagine you’ll make more than one visit here.

Neues Rathaus

If you visit Marienplatz, you can also see Neues Rathaus at the same time. The building is featured on countless postcards, and is the most popular landmark in Munich. Marvel at the Gothic Revival exterior and come to hear the Glockenspiel from March until October at 11:99, 12:00, and 17:00. If you want to head up the tower, we recommend it as you’ll get an incredible view of the Alps!

BMW Welt

Car lovers, unite! Germany is home to some of the best car producers in the world, and BMW is actually based in Munich. Fanatics from all over visit year after year to check out the latest on the BMW production line, book a test drive, and perhaps purchase their newest dream car. If you weren’t aware, Germany’s highways don’t have a speed limit, so driving these fast cars here has a whole different meaning than in most parts of the world. At BMW Welt, you can see all the latest in their showroom and book a test drive with no pressure to purchase. Did we mention BMW Welt is free? We think this is a cool thing to see if you only have 48 hours in Munich.

Englischer Garten

A visit to Munich’s famous Englischer Garten is an absolute must. This vast park could easily take up your whole time here, and has some cool sights in it worth checking out. We recommend a visit to the Japanese Teahouse, and to watch the surfers on the Eisbach River. Yes…you can surf in Munich! The Eisbach River has a strong current which creates a wave you can ride for up to a minute at a time.

Frauenkirche

This is the second most popular postcard landmark to see on your 48 hours in Munich. Frauenkirche is actually the tallest building in, standing at an impressive 109 metres. Unlike many Catholic churches, this one is special as it’s interior is relatively minimalistic, but is beautiful nonetheless. While Frauenkirche suffered extensive damage in WWII, the building has been restored to its former glory, so we recommend a visit here.

Enjoy a Beer & Pretzel

To get the quintessential Munich experience, you have to visit a beer garden, or at least try a pretzel. Bavaria and Munich have a long standing tradition of beer-making, and quite arguable produce some of the best beers in the world. And what better pairing with beer than a traditional pretzel?

If you plan on coming to Munich to take part in the Oktoberfest celebrations, expect prices to be a bit higher than usual. Having said that, it’s an experience you’ll never forget, especially if you manage to don lederhosen or a dirndl!
