Amsterdam is one of the most popular and exciting destinations to visit in Europe. While it’s known for amazing parties, coffee shops, and a Red Light District, Amsterdam offers so much more. Characterised by seemingly endless canals, adorable architecture, mixed with a touch of modernity, you’re going to love Amsterdam at each corner. Whether you’re looking to let loose, or simply enjoy a weekend away, you’ll always find something to do in the Dutch capital. Read on to discover our recommendations in the Amsterdam Getaway Guide.

Getting Around

Amsterdam is one of the easiest places to get around. Since it’s flat, walking isn’t difficult, but be prepared for large crowds. The city is known to attract lots of tourists and travellers alike, so it’s best to know before you go.
While walking is easy, you should always be aware of cyclists. The city is home to over 881,000 bikes, and the Dutch like to get around on them.

Amsterdam Weekend Guide - Bicycle Rental

Amsterdam has several bike rental options, so if you want to do as the Dutch do, you can! Bikes can be rented for about €7.50 a day from many hostels, but there are tons of bike sharing companies if you just want a few hours of fun. Consider this our first tip in our Amsterdam Getaway Guide!

Top Things to See in Amsterdam

As we said earlier, Amsterdam is full of things to see and do. You could easily spend weeks here and still not cross off all the items off your list. In order to get the best out of your weekend in Amsterdam, we’ll break down our top recommendations below:

Museums

Amsterdam is home to over 50 museums, but visiting them all in a weekend is impossible. While most would suggest the Van Gogh Museum, we won’t suggest this as it’s too large for a weekend visit. For the history buffs, we recommend the Anne Frank House & Museum. You can see it all within an hour, and if you go towards the end of opening hours, queues are much shorter!

If you’re more into modern photography, then be sure to visit FOAM. Check out their program to see what special exhibits are happening while you’re in Amsterdam. Be wary of admission as they only allow you to pay by card, but you can also pre-order your tickets online.

Coffee Shops

There really is something to suit everyone who’s looking for a smoke in Amsterdam. Coffee shops are all over the city, and aside from cannabis flower, they also serve snacks and non-alcoholic drinks (never mix cannabis and alcohol).

Amsterdam Weekend Guide – Coffee Shop

All coffee shops have menus where you can choose what kind of high you prefer; sativa, indica, and hybrids are all readily available, as well as special cakes and other sweets. Be careful though because some of the stuff can be much more potent than what you’re used to back home. For a list of the best famous coffee shops and smart (mushroom) shops in town, just ask when you check in. No need to be shy!

Shops and Markets

The Dutch are known for their strong fashion sense, so shopping while in Amsterdam is always fun! You’ll find all your shopping needs fulfilled on Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk, which are pedestrian streets running from the Central Station to Muntplein.

Other notable shopping areas include:

Food

Eating in Amsterdam can be expensive, but shouldn’t be too bad if you’re only here for a weekend. Due to the huge amounts of coffee shops in the city, lots of food establishments cater to those looking to satisfy their ‘munchie’ cravings. But even if you don’t visit a coffee shop, your weekend in Amsterdam would be incomplete without getting a stack of Dutch-style pancakes!

While there’s loads of places to satisfy your cravings, Amsterdam is home to several styles of food, and options catering to all diet types can be easily found. We’re sure you’ll leave the city full!

Where to Stay in Amsterdam

Our recommendation for the top hostel in Amsterdam is the famous 비행 돼지 업타운. Located near Vondelpark and the Van Gogh Museum, this hostel is the perfect place to rest your head. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, party, or simply chill out, you’ll be satisfied staying with Flying Pig Uptown. And don’t leave booking to the last minute: this hostel is one of the most popular in Amsterdam, so be sure to book in lots of time! And we really mean that if you plan on coming for King’s Day.

Amsterdam Getaway Guide

We hope our recommendations in the Amsterdam Getaway Guide has helped you plan your time in the Dutch capital! There’s just something about the narrow streets and canals that separate one from the next that will make you feel like you’re in another world.
