King’s Day is a huge traditional celebration in The Netherlands on the 27th of April. People typically start celebrating the evening before, deck themselves out in orange, and hit the streets and canals to celebrate King Willem-Alexander’s birthday, Dutch style! Even the royal family comes out to celebrate with Dutch citizens!
So what can you expect? The streets and canals of Amsterdam turn into a giant open air party, and includes markets, live music, canal boat parades, street parties, and more. Want to join in on the fun? Here’s our tips to make the most of your Kings Day celebrations in Amsterdam!
If you plan to participate, make sure you have something orange to wear if you want to fit in with the locals! Orange is the national colour of The Netherlands and the Dutch Royal Family. Don’t have something orange in your closet? No worries, shops all over the country will be full of bright accessories to help you celebrate!
Check the Weather
Dutch weather is rather unpredictable, so make sure you check the weather forecast before you arrive! An orange umbrella might be a useful item, since it’s practical for travels and is the most sported colour of the day! AccuWeather is a great app for hourly weather predictions.
Plan Your Day
Even though King’s Day doesn’t necessarily need a lot of planning, it doesn’t hurt to check out where you want to go beforehand! On King’s Day, public transport is busier, runs on different timetables, and many routes have detours in order to avoid the festivities. Planning your time will make the celebrations more enjoyable and less stressful!
Have Cash on You
It’s important you bring enough cash, especially if you’re planning to visit the flea markets. The food and drink markets also don’t offer payment with card, and with long line ups at ATM’s in the cities, it’s better to have cash on you!
When Nature Calls
When you gotta go, you gotta go. There’ll be lots of extra public toilets on the streets, but if you can’t find one, you can find bathrooms in bars and even in the homes of locals who offer their bathrooms up in exchange for some coin. Make sure you don’t wait until the floodgates are about to burst as the lineups can get crazy!
