1. Szentendre

First up on our list of great day trips from Budapest is Szentendre, a small town on the Danube river, north of 부다페스트. This town dates back to the Romans, but is home to so much more than just incredible history. Famous for its artistic and cultural scene, there’s always something going on here, especially in the summer. The medieval village, known as The Skanzen, is essentially an open air museum, full of charming and whimsical scenes. Szentendre is also home to some nice restaurants and cafés, as well as a lovely river front perfect for an afternoon or evening walk.

And getting here is easy! You can either rent a car, take the train, or even go by boat. If you have time, we recommend also visiting Lupa Island. This tiny island on the Danube in between Budapest and Szentendre is a popular spot for locals to looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy city. Lupa has a great beach so it’s an absolute must visit in summer!

2. Visegrád and Esztergom

Visegrád and Esztergom can both be found a little further up the river from Szentendre, and they’re both great spots for day trips from Budapest. Located on a huge river bend, Visegrád is as captivating as it is historical. The name ‘Visegrád’ comes from the Slavic word for ‘high castle’, which is a pretty accurate description for what you’ll find here. Considered one of the most historical spots on the Daube, it was once a summer spot for Hungarian kings. You can visit tons of crumbling ruins (some from the Roman era), including a 13th century citadel. And the views from here are spectacular.

Esztergom is located a little further down the river but close enough you can see both within a day. This town used to be the seat of Hungarian king’s from the 10th-14th centuries, and is also the birthplace of Hungary’s first king. Esztergom has a huge basilica, and tons of historical attractions to visit. To this day, the town is still the seat of Roman Catholicism in Hungary. Both Visegrád and Esztergom make for great day trips from 부다페스트!

3. Etyek

Consider yourself a wine lover? A film biff? Or maybe you just want to connect with the local gastronomy scene? Then you need to visit Etyek! Located 30km west of 부다페스트, this small town is famous for its rolling vineyards, yummy food, and an impressive film studio. And it’s not just any studio; Korda Studios is a key player in the industry, with ties to blockbuster films such as Blade Runner 2049, Inferno, The Martian, The Last Kingdom, and Hellboy II. They offer guests guided tours to get insight into the wonderful world of film production.

But if film isn’t your thing, no worries. Etyek is home to tons of great vineyards, making it a beautiful spot for a day trip from Budapest. There’s tons of vineyards to choose from, so the decision is yours!

4. Börzsöny

Last on our list of recommendations for day trips from Budapest is Börzsöny. For those who want to just spend some time in the nature, this is where you want to be. Located in the North Hungarian Mountains, Börzsöny is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and reconnecting with nature. The highest peak here is Csóványos, measuring in at a towering 983 metres. And if you want to see some wild animals in their natural habitat, there’s a pretty good chance you will. Börzsöny is home to different wild animals like deer, wild boar, roe, and even mouflon.
