Nice Beach and the Promenade des Anglais
Nice Beach and the the Promenade des Anglais is just 200 metres from the hostel and extends 5km along the Mediterranean Sea from the airport on the west side to the United States Quay on the east side and it’s a great way to take in the sun and go for a swim. It offers both public and pay sections (try a sun lounger on a private beach for 20 euros a day) giving you and your pocket the choice of how to spend your day there. Take a stroll along this wide iconic promenade with beautiful sea views.
The whole area is covered with baroque stylish churches and buildings which make a really good impression on all visitors like: the Opera House, The Law Court (Palais de la Justice) and the center of the old town (Place Rossetti) with Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate. Don’t forget to stop here for really good ice creams at ‘Glacier Fenocchio’.The Old town is allocated between Masséna square on the west side, to the castle hill (Le Chateau) on the east side, and at the Garibaldi square at the north part of the city. In this part of the city there are the oldest monuments.
Fruit & Flower market
The biggest fruit and flower market in France! And only a 5 minute walk from the hostel. This market is THE best place to buy fruit and vegetables and a huge selection of flowers and plants. Strawberries sold by the kilogram for around 3€ and huge selection of olives in all flavours, this is the best place to get a healthy snack before you go see the rest of the French Riviera. Come the evening it turns into a thriving hotspot for all the big restaurants in Nice. All offering good price menu’s (starter, main & dessert) and a great mix of French, Italian and even American delights. Or head back in time for the hostel happy hour and get great budget backpacker dinners from the hostel restaurant.
Parc du Château
For one of the best views of the city you have to climb to the top of the Parc du Château. With beautiful gardens and a waterfall visible from the old town, it’s a great place to picnic and gives panoramic views across the Baie des Anges towards Antibes. Grab the free lift up or takes the steps if you want to see the amazing view from the top.
Musée d’Art Moderne et d’art Contemporain (MAMAC)
Located just off Garibaldi square, this colossal building is home to a wide variety of modern art examples (Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein to name just a few) dating back to 1950. Not only is there great art, but also magnificent views of the city itself from the rooftop garden. The museum also has a great terrace where lunch can be bought from the restaurant C Factory (ask for the plat de jour).
Museum Marc Chagall
One of the most popular museums in Nice, it stands out as a stunning monument to one of France’s greatest artists. Inside you will find a wide range of stunning canvases (some portraying the Old Testament), tapestries and lithographs. Entry is 7.50€, with discounts for students available.
In a stunning setting amongst the Roman ruins and next to the Franciscan Monastery this museum contains many works by Matisse which he donated following his death in 1954. Entry starts from 5€. 164, avenue des Arenes de Cimiez.Open: Every day from 10h to 18h.
