Yad Vashem

This is the world’s Holocaust Memorial Centre and is first up on our guide to the top things to see in Jerusalem. Yad Vashem works to preserve the memory of those lost in the Holocaust. It’s also an educational institute, visited by millions of people every year to learn and pay their respects. A visit here is – without a doubt – a humbling experience.

서쪽 벽

This is believed to be the Holiest place in the city, and therefore, the most visited. Built in the 10th century BCE, the wall stood 30 metres high, but was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. Also known as the Wailing Wall, it’s a place for Jews to mourn the loss of the Second Temple which once stood here. People travel from wide and far to visit this holy site, pray here, and touch it. You’re allowed to write a little note, and stick it in one of the cracks in the wall. Twice a year, the notes are collected and placed in Holy ground to decompose. When visiting, please be respectful and remember that men and women must not approach the wall together.

Mea Shearim Neighbourhood

The Mea Shearim neighbourhood is one of the oldest Jewish neighbourhoods in Israel and is located just outside the Old City walls. But before deciding to come here, please keep in mind this is the home of Jerusalem’s Orthodox Jews, so respectful attire is expected. So cover your shoulders and knees, especially for women.

Traditional Orthodox clothing for men includes a white shirt, a black blazer, black pants, and a wide brimmed, black hat. Unless you see other tourists, this is practically all you’ll see here as far as attire is concerned. This charming neighbourhood is worth a visit to see a different side of Jerusalem.

Church of Holy Sepulchre

Located in the Christian quarter of the Old City, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre dates back as far as the 4th century. Not only is it built on the site where Jesus was crucified, it’s also said that Jesus was buried and resurrected here. His empty tomb is on display for people to touch. But be ready to wait in a long queue as people come in masses for this experience.

Within the church there are the last four stations of the Via Dolorosa which represent the final episodes of Jesus’ passion.

Mount of Olives

The Mount of Olives acts as a buffer separating the Old City of Jerusalem from the Judean Desert. Located just behind the Western Wall, it reaches 800 metres, giving you amazing 360° views. To the west, you can see Jerusalem, and to the east, you can see the desert. The name simply stems from the fact that this area was once covered with olive trees, and during the time of the Pilgrimage, Jews would sleep here, sheltered by the trees. Nowadays, it also acts as a burial site for Jewish people, with an estimated 150,000 graves.

Dome of the Rock (Temple Mount)

This Islamic Shrine is located on the Temple Mount in the Old City and is one of the top things to see in Jerusalem. It’s one of the oldest known works of Islamic architecture, and topped with a gold dome.
