1. Neues Rathaus

If you’ve ever seen a classic postcard from Munich, it’s likely this spot depicted in the photo. This Gothic building is Munich’s City Hall, full of arches, pinnacles, and flowers. Its most popular feature has to be the Glockenspiel, which chimes daily at 11:00, 12:00, and 17:00.

2. Marienplatz

Located in the centre of the city, this is easily the most famous square in Munich. With tons of picturesque buildings bordering the square, you’ll find tons of spots in Marienplatz to get some great photos. And if you happen to visit before the holidays, you’ll likely spend some time here at the Christmas Market sipping some glühwein and getting into the festive spirit!

3. Hofgarten

This garden is a popular hang out for Munich residents, and it’s also a regular concert spot for famed cellist, Barjo Ajkic. If you happen to visit Hofgarten on a sunny day, you’re in for a very pleasant show. He usually sets up in the garden’s stone bandstand, and belts out tons of classics, with a few modern numbers. It’s a great spot to relax and escape the city!

4. Frauenkirche

A fixture in the Munich skyline, this church is an impressive landmark to visit. Towering at 109 metres, it’s actually the tallest structure in Munich! While it might not be as beautiful as other churches, it’s worth it nonetheless.

5. St. Peter’s Church

St Peter Church has one of the best viewing platforms in the city, so you’re bound to get some great Instagram shots here! For less than €2 a ticket, you can climb up the tower. Try and visit in the morning as the afternoons can get quite crowded.

6. Visit one of many Beer Halls or Gardens

One cannot possibly visit Munich without taking in its most prized export: beer! In the warmer months, beer gardens all over the city open up, serving up delicious Bavarian beers, traditional foods, and a unique atmosphere. In winter, you can tuck away into a beer hall to warm your bones! And of course, Munich is also home to the world-famous Oktoberfest!

7. Deutsches Museum

This top cultural repository can be found on an island in the middle of Munich’s Eisbach River. If you’re into science, technology and whacky inventions, you need to check this place out. This place is in no way dull! You can check out giant shiny planes of yesteryear, a mock-up film studio, and try your hand at various experiments. It makes for a fun and interactive good time, and is guaranteed to satisfy the biggest (grown up) kids in the crowd.

8. Odeonsplatz

This popular square is named after the former Odeon Opera House, which now serves as a Bavarian government building. Odeonsplatz is as beautiful as it is historic. It was also the location where Hitler and the Nazi party attempted their first coup d’état, known as the Beer Hall Putsch. When he later became Chancellor, this square became rather important to him. A law passed that mandated everyone passing through to do the Nazi salute. This led many to boycott the square altogether – bypassing it via a nearby alley.

9. Nymphenburg Palace

This attraction brings in over 300,000 visitors every year. Nymphenburg Palace, with its finely manicured grounds and gold leaf laden interior will not disappoint. Commissioned in 1664 as the playground for the son of Ferdinand Maria and Henriette Adelaide, the structure was later expanded into a palace that now resembles the grandeur of Versailles. The best bit however is the ceiling frescoes adorning the three storey tall stone hall. This awe inspiring palace is a mere 15 minutes by train from the city centre, and you don’t have to embrace the generic, soulless sightseeing buses to get there. Just hop on the S-Bahn!

10. Englischer Garten

Munich’s largest garden is full of things to do beyond just chilling on the grass! As is typical with almost any green space in Munich, you can find tons of beer gardens to grab a beer and mingle with the locals. Don’t be surprised if you spot some naked people sprawled out on the lawn, either. Germans are fairly comfortable with nudity, and you’ll likely see this displayed in the Englischer Garten!

Don’t forget to check out the Monument to the White Rose Movement. The black graphite monument pays tribute to the Munich University students and their professor, who successfully ran an anonymous anti-Nazi leaflet campaign from 1942-43. In February 1943, they were infiltrated and killed by the Gestapo. In support of their bravery, their final unpublished leaflet was smuggled to the UK. It was then mass produced, loaded on allied planes, and dropped across Germany in July 1943. So if you have the chance, swing by and take a minute to pay your respects.

And while Munich might be landlocked, you can also go surfing here! Yes, we said surfing! In typical German form, engineers figured out a way to create enough ebb and flow for some serious board action. You’ll find this ultra cool spot in the northeast corner of the gardens. Whether you’re a surfer or not, it’s worth checking out and watching people ride the wave!

Fanatics from all over visit year after year to check out the latest on the BMW production line, book a test drive, and perhaps purchase their newest dream car. If you weren’t aware, Germany’s highways don’t have a speed limit, so driving these fast cars here has a whole different meaning than in most parts of the world. At BMW Welt, you can see all the latest in their showroom and book a test drive with no pressure to purchase. Did we mention BMW Welt is free?
