Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and one of the most dynamic cities in Europe. Also known as the City of Seven Hills, it will leave you breathless with wonder…and its notoriously steep hills. Lisbon is a popular destination all year round, so no matter when you visit, you’ll be glad you did. Just remember to pack comfortable shoes when you go!

Top Things in Lisbon

Morning, noon, or night, there’s always something to do in Lisbon. The city is home to lots of young people, so no matter what kind of holiday you’re looking for, Lisbon has something for you!

For those who like to do a bit of retail therapy while on vacation, you’re going to love Lisbon. Starting with the Chiado neighbourhood, you’ll find several well-known and local shops amongst the beautiful 18th century architecture. But if you’re more into vintage, head to the Barrio Alto district. Also known as Lisbon’s SoHo, you’ll be spoiled with the selection of record shops, vintage boutiques, bars, restaurants, and cafes here. We also recommend coming here for the nightlife, too!

Lisbon is also home to several museums, some of which should not be missed. The most popular is the Museo Calouste Glubenkian, which boasts a large collection of Renaissance paintings. But if you’re more into museums that are a little less focused on art, we suggest the Museu Nacional dos Coches. The museum features an impressive collection of 17th to 19th century carriages.

No trip to Lisbon can be called a success without visiting Belém. For the history buffs, Belém is an old port from where ships commanded by the likes of Vasco da Gama and Henry the Navigator set sail. The area today is certainly a hot spot for tourism, but is worth a visit for the food, drinks, and the neighbourhood vibe.

Where to Stay in Lisbon

Our top recommendation in Lisbon is Sunset Destination Hostel, located only minutes away from the popular Barrio Alto. And on those hot summer days, cool off in their rooftop pool and grab a drink at their rooftop bar. Just like Lisbon itself, there’s always something going on at Sunset Destination Hostel.

When thinking of Spain, certain things come to mind: tapas, Flamenco, and incredible nightlife are usually at the top of everyone’s list. And you’ll find all of this in Seville. Being the birthplace of Flamenco, a visit is incomplete without taking in a traditional Flamenco show. We recommend checking out La Casa del Flamenco, located in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood.

As we mentioned, Seville is home to lots of beautiful architecture, much of which is used as a backdrop to lots of famous films. And the Plaza de Espana is one of those places. Covered in intricate tile work, film buffs will recognise it from Star Wars: Episode II. Entrance is free, so spend some time wandering around. You’ll surely find a few great spots to photograph here.

La Giralda is Seville’s famous bell tower, and is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. La Giralda is easily one of the most recognisable landmarks here, and climbing to the top is worth it for the view. Make sure you pace yourself though – you’ll need to climb 35 flights of stairs before reaching the top.

How can I travel from Lisbon to Seville?

While the distance between Lisbon and Seville isn’t all that far, travelling between the two isn’t necessarily the easiest. Both trains and busses detour through Faro in the Algarve, so the trip can take upwards of 13-14 hours. However, travelling by car between the two destinations takes just about 5 hours of driving, and renting one is easy. But if time is of the essence, we suggest hoping on a plane, which takes just over an hour!
