Marseille, France

The first destination on our south France and Italy beach guide is Marseille. The second largest city in France, it’s main attractions are its beaches and its old, colourful harbour. For a convenient beach day, head to Plage des Catlans, only walking distance from the city centre. The soft, white sand and turquoise water are a great backdrop, no matter the time of day. We recommend dining at one of the beach side restaurants for some fresh and incredible seafood.

Aside from it’s incredible beaches, Cassis is a picturesque island sitting just off the coast of Marseille. We highly recommend a day excursion here, and take the opportunity to swim its beaches and jump off some cliffs! And if you’re into water sports like kayaking, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to do that here.

Where to Stay in Marseille

Vertigo Vieux-Port Hostel is our top recommendation in Marseille. Located in the Old Port area, it’s walking distance from beaches, bars, clubs, and other notable landmarks. Offering both dorms and private rooms, you’ll love their charming decor and comfy atmosphere. They also offer a range of activities and excursions, and have cosy common areas for you to chill in after a long day in the sun. The staff at Vertigo will make you feel at home!

Nice, France

This bright town on the French Riviera with its blue waters and stunning beaches is next on our south France & Italy beach guide. While Nice’s beaches are a little rough and pebbly for some, they are set in one of the most spectacular bays in the whole of France. Beaches near Antibes and Jean les Pins are sandier than most of those that you will find along Nice’s coast.

The food served at the coastal restaurants is basically the Mediterranean cuisine and French wines just add to its delight. Moreover, boats are readily available to take you out to sea where you can have an amazing view of the beautiful blue waters of the Cote d’Azur. Apart from the beaches, Nice offers little bit of everything. Its museums and cathedrals are worth visiting to take in the French cultural heritage. And there’s always an event happening in town! The towering landmark of the Russian Cathedral is hard to miss and it dates you back to the Russian revolution.

Where to Stay in Nice

Villa Saint Exupery Beach Hostel is a sociable and stylish hostel for travellers of all ages. The hostel has both clean and airy dorm rooms and stylish private rooms with an ensuite. Their services include: free WiFi, computers and work space, towels,  a 24 hour gym, weekly activities, and a popular bar with daily Happy Hour. It’s a great place to recharge each night after spending the day at the beach!

Rimini, Italy

Rimini is located just 3 hours from Venice and 1 hour from Bologna, and is the perfect destination for all beach lovers. In fact, Rimini just happens to be the most popular beach destination on Italy’s East Coast, for both locals and tourists alike. Rimini’s beautiful coastline and stunning beaches make it a star beach destination. The atmosphere all around town is calm and relaxing, and we recommend heading to the boardwalk at night when it’s all lit up. If what you are looking for a beach holiday, then the answer is Rimini.

Where to Stay in Rimini

The Sunflower Beach Backpacker Hostel is the best hostel in Rimini, and is located only 200m from the beach! It’s also only a few minutes’ walk to nearby night clubs, pubs, cafes, and restaurants. They also have a big communal kitchen, and offer pasta cooking lessons. But more importantly, they have one of the busiest bars in Rimini. The happy hour deals and cheap beer will get your night off to the best start!

Sorrento, Italy

Facing the bay of Naples in southern Italy you’ll find the lovely town of Sorrento. Located in the famous Amalfi Coast this charming village offers exquisite landscapes with the sea, mountains, beautiful beaches, and a historical old town. Unlike other destinations throughout Italy, the beaches in Sorrento are a bit rocky, but this really doesn’t take away from the experience! You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas and admire the view over Naples and Mount Vesuvius. In fact, you can reach both Naples and Pompeii relatively easily from here. And while Sorrento will not be a sandy beach experience, we guarantee that it’s worth it!

Where to Stay in Sorrento

Overlooking the Bay of Naples, Seven Hostel, will exceed all your expectations. Decorated and outfitted to the highest standards, the hostel has a young, fresh feel, perfectly in harmony with its setting in an ancient 19th century building. And as evening descends over the Mediterranean Sea, the perfect place to watch the sunset is on their terrace bar, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. It’s a great place to meet fellow travellers in a relaxed yet sophisticated setting.
