Party like royalty on King’s Day!

Posted at:3 April, 2017 in Blog, Festivals, Special Events

Enjoy King’s Day in Amsterdam and Rotterdam as you party like royalty!

If you think you know how to party then prepare for a serious party masterclass from the people of the Netherlands this King’s Day!

On 27th of April the cities of the Netherlands are transformed into one crazy orange street party with residents taking to the streets in celebration of their King (and this public holiday), but these guys don’t need an excuse to party! Outside drinking and fun is central to the day with everyone getting involved – there are loads of people selling food and drinks, or simply tasting them!

King’s Night – Koningsnacht

Making the party even bigger – the night before is also celebrated as King’s Night (Koningsnacht). This is also the Nacht van Oranje (or Orange Night) – a big night for Dutch music artists and there will be parties and live shows all over the country.
The biggest funfairs are the one in Dam Square in Amsterdam, Shiehaven harbour in Rotterdam, Grote Markt square in Haarlem and Lange Voorhout in The Hague.

The festivities in Amsterdam and Rotterdam include famous DJs and lots of partying on and along the canals as all the boats fill up with people dancing and enjoying the festivities. All of the Netherlands will be celebrating with general merriment and feasting, turning the fountains orange, drinking orange bitter liqueur and enjoying the street party atmosphere. There will be a carnival vibe and probably since it’s Dutch, a lot of drinking beers and swimming in canals. Not only is this a great day to party, but in Amsterdam this is also the perfect time to celebrate gay culture.

Cafes and bars move their tables onto the street so you can take in the day’s action as you have your beer and do some serious people watching!

Flea Markets

King’s Day is a great day to see how the Dutch really live, with huge Flea Markets all over the city (and country). For bargain-hunters or simply the nosey, King’s Day is the ultimate in Flea Market pleasure with everyone selling their pre-loved items in front of their houses so there are hours of leisurely browsing with a beer!
