Prague’s unique alternative cultural sites

At first glance, the Czech capital consists of beautiful old houses, red rooftops, and Gothic spires. However, if you dig deeper, the city will show you a completely different side! Indeed, Prague is overflowing with art and has a very rich cultural scene of contemporary art, music, theatre, and design all within astonishing places. Due to its industrial past, the city has several former factories and warehouses, since transformed into surprising and fascinating cultural sites. Come by to see some beautiful street arts and exhibitions, to attend a concert, or just to have a hot coffee in a creative atmosphere. Here are some don’t miss spots, for discovering the alternative and artistic side of Prague.

A new wave of off-the-radar art spaces has opened in a former factory. This huge space hosts artist studios, art galleries, exhibition spaces, and a café. It showcases the contemporary art movement that is mostly centered on young Czech artists who have something to tell the world. The complex offers a wide selection of events such as exhibitions, concerts, cinema, workshops, parties, markets, etc. Pragovka also offers a great opportunity to fully dive into its street art. Walk under the interesting Pragovka sign to enter the main gate, and admire the huge wall paintings on your left.

This renovated 19th-century industrial complex hosts a multifunctional center for the presentation of international and Czech art, architecture, and design. Its exhibition area is more than 3000 m² and contains a café, a bookstore and a design shop. DOX is perceived as a dynamic cultural platform and a place to experience various trends in art. It takes a modern approach to the multinational issues art confronts today. The building itself is a demonstration of contemporary architecture, including some fascinating art pieces, such as a giant wooden zeppelin on the rooftop. Here, you can enjoy DOX’s artsy neighborhood, Holešovice, which is a genuine open-air gallery for street art lovers.

Between Tusarova 31 and Dělnická 32, Vnitroblock revitalizes a once forgotten street into a remarkable industrial space. Indeed, this multifunctional center is a refuge for those who are looking for cultural experiences, or who simply love spending time at a cozy and creative atmosphere.  Vnitroblock currently offers many different activities where you will surely find happiness. You can enjoy a café/bar, a restaurant, several stores (sneakers, clothing, vinyl, garden shop), but also an art gallery, a dance venue and a theater. Film lovers should all come to see the smallest underground movie theater ever!

Vnitroblock an alternative and cultural centre in Prague

The Czech artist David Černý founded this independent international centre of modern art in 2001 for interdisciplinary projects and collaboration. Located between the motorway and the eight-rail train tracks, MeetFactory was once an industrial building. It is now a unique complex dedicated to the promotion of the contemporary art scene and its dialogue with the public at large. It is the place where all disciplines (fine art, music, and theater) and artistic groups meet and merge. The complex is fully equipped with a concert and a theater hall, a café, three art galleries, and an artist residency. All year round, MeetFactory has a rich program of concerts and music events, theater performances, and exhibitions.

In the 18th century, this prestigious baroque building was a shelter for war veterans. After many years of abandonment, The Initiative for Invalidovna, an association of professionals in urban development, art production, communication, marketing, and management, has brought this place back to life. Since then, this historic monument hosts many events such as exhibitions, performances, art installations, workshops, but also a café, a digital garden lab, and many other activities. The Invalidovna is an amazing model of heritage restoration!

Trafo Gallery

Similarly to DOX and Vnitroblock, Trafo Gallery is a former slaughterhouse located in Holešovice – specifically within its famous and largest year-round market in Prague. Since 2006, within halls n°14 and n°18 you will find Trafo Gallery, which is a private studio and an exhibition hall over 200 m². In addition, the space features a huge skylight which gives it a bright and relaxed atmosphere, and presents six exhibitions per year by its own artists in residency and also by other Czech or international artists.
