Forget about destinations overrun with tourists this summer and get yourself to one of these Alternative Events this Summer in Europe with beer festivals, color runs, boat carnivals and water sport festivals! There are plenty of interesting events taking place around Europe that provide a great opportunity to explore somewhere new.
‘The Big Week’ – Bilbao’s Semana Grande Festival
The Basque city of Bilbao throws one hell of a party for 9 days each August – the Aste Nausea (or Semana Grande in Spanish). All along the river bank in the shadow of the famous Guggenheim museum there is a whole host of parades, food and drink tents and stalls (of course) bull fighting, nightly fireworks and some great music and shows. Expect lots of merriment and flag waving from the jubilant crowd! Beginning with the mascot Marijaia stepping out onto a balcony as a rocket is shot in the air, the festival then lasts all week long – watch out for the parade of giants who eat small children! The Color Run in Berlin
Running 5km can be fun! Yes really, when there’s a great atmosphere, lots of good music, party people and plenty of colour. The Color Run in Berlin takes place 21st August and will be great to take part in or just as a spectator – it’s all about having fun. Belgrade’s Beer Fest 2016
This month don’t miss Belgrade’s Beer Fest – the biggest beer festival in Southeastern Europe with Rudimental performing at the opening party on 17th August. There are five days of fun to be had, with a chance to get funky to some awesome live music with over 570 acts performing live, and sampling some of the 300 different beers! Belgrade Boat Carnival 2016
August 27th sees the Sava River taken over with a huge Boat Carnival for the 13th year. The boats will be decked out and sailing around between the Branko and Old Sava Bridges – expect acrobatics on the water, music, magic and plenty of carnival atmosphere. Wear a costume and win a prize!
