Why Trains over Planes? Why Hostels over Hotels?
Europe has a well connected train system, meaning you can more or less avoid air travel. Travelling by train, or ‘Interailing’, has been common for years, but has recently seen a surge in popularity. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, governments all over the continent are working on (if they haven’t already) the reintroduction of night trains.
In addition to ‘interrailing’ being a greener way to travel, it’s far more relaxing than flying. Trains are also much more accommodating if you’re looking to get some work done between points, or if you just want to stretch your legs. Ditch the long queues at airport security and hop onboard!

How can I become an Eco-Wanderer?
Eco-Wanderer officially kicks off on March 25th, 2022, and will remain active until the end of the year. Participating in this campaign is simple, as long as you hold an Interrail / Eurail ticket or pass. Just follow these steps:
- Head over to famoushostels.com and navigate to our Eco-Wanderer calculator
- Enter your starting point and destination and click calculate. The CO2 you’v saved by choosing a train over a plane will appear in a certificate form. You’ll also receive points.
- Upon arrival at your destination, present your certificate and cash it in for discounts and other rewards at the hostel
- Keep travelling to collect more points and continue getting more discounts!
That’s all you have to do to participate in this campaign. Our campaign is not limited to any age or nationality. The only requirement is that you be an Interrail or Eurail pass holder.

Are There Additional Perks?
We’re so glad you asked! There are more ways to participate in Eco-Wanderer than just travelling from destination to destination. Over the course of the year, EFH will host green initiatives, geo-caching events, and more for participants to collect more points. A running tally will be available on our home page, and the biggest Eco-Wanderer at the end of the year will be rewarded with a month long Interrail pass, as well as free accommodation at EFH hostels!
EFH will also be hosting giveaways on social media to incite campaign participation. We really just want to get you back out there and see you again!
