10 Packing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Need some help in avoiding those annoying – yet common – packing mistakes? Look no further and check out our guide to 10 Packing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them!

Like most things in life, packing is an art and mistakes are common! While travelling is generally fun, it’s a bummer when you get stuck with overweight luggage fees, or when you end up sweating because of a heavy bag. When it comes to packing, there’s a few hard and fast rules every traveller should follow, whether they’re a beginner or a pro. Leave your valuables behind, don’t pack food, and only bring what you need. But let’s get into more detail with our guide to 10 Packing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.

1. Excessive Toiletries

Bringing excessive toiletries is one of the first packing mistakes we want to talk about. These can seriously add weight to your luggage if you aren’t smart about it. We’re not telling you to ditch your skincare or hygiene routine, but you probably won’t need any full sized products.

Most products come in travel sizes, and if not, we suggest picking up some silicone travel tubes. Unless you plan on spending your trip in a remote part of Europe, there’s always an option to pick up more if you run out. And it’s usually quite cheap!

2. Loads of Books

We’re sorry if this offends the bookworms! We really love books, but bringing more than one takes up space, adds extra weight, and is an overall pain to lug around. Why not take it as an opportunity to to try the world of e-books out?

But if you really want to read, most hostels have free book exchanges where you can pick one up if you fancy. Alternatively, you can pop by a local flea market and get one for less than a euro!

3. Excessive Clothing

This can be a tricky one to navigate in the age of Instagram, but we want you to really take this one seriously! It’s probably one of the most common packing mistakes. No matter how long you’re travelling for, you won’t need 5 pairs of jeans, and we advise against packing the ‘just in case’ items. Most hostels have laundry facilities, so you can always have clean clothes on hand.

Take versatile items that wash and dry easily, don’t need ironing, and are comfortable to wear. And remember, if you forget something you absolutely need, you can always pick it up on your travels! Click aqui for more help on packing essentials!

4. Gadgets You Won’t Use

Unless you’re travelling for business, a digital nomad, or a remote worker, you won’t need much in the way of tech gadgets. Leave your laptop and extra camera lenses at home but carefully consider what you’ll actually need. The fewer items you bring, the lighter your luggage and you won’t have to worry about them getting damaged or stolen.

5. Hairdryer & Straightener

It’s quite likely your hairdryer & straightener aren’t compatible with European or U.K. outlets (yes, they’re different), which can result in a blown fuse and a broken product. Most hostels actually have hairdryers for hire, but we encourage you to check beforehand so you don’t get stuck with wet hair, especially in winter. Brrrr!

6. Always Have Carry-On Baggage

This is probably one of the worst packing mistakes anyone could make. The benefit of carry-on baggage is for those unfortunate times when your checked bag gets lost. Airlines will often provide you with an emergency care package, but it’s safer to ensure you have at least a days worth of clothing and essential items in your carry-on. It’s unlikely your checked baggage will go missing, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

7. Packing Cubes or Laundry Bags

Packing cubes can help you save space in your baggage, but also serve other purposes. For example, they can help you stay organised while travelling, because your items are neatly packed in cubes, rather than all packed in one giant bag. This also helps you keep your clean clothes away from your dirty ones. Not brining something to separate the two is a pretty common packing mistake we think you should avoid!

8. Plan for Weather

There’s nothing worse than getting caught in inclement weather and not being prepared for it. While weather patterns are becoming more and more difficult to predict due to climate change, we advise you take a look anyway. Also check the forecast for the time you’ll be travelling, and ensure you pack suitable items.

9. Room for Souvenirs

One of the most disappointing packing mistakes you can make is not leaving enough room for souvenirs. Whatever you decide to pick up, you’ll want to ensure you have room and won’t have to pay overweight luggage fees when you leave. Pack your bags, but not too full!

10. Illegal items

This should go without saying, but we advise you to NOT pack anything illegal. Travelling with things like fireworks, undocumented animals, or weapons can put your entire holiday in jeopardy. Even if it’s just a lighter, but it’s shaped like a gun, airport authorities can confiscate it and take you in for questioning.

And just because something is legal or accepted in one country, doesn’t mean it is in another. In order to avoid any awkward or illegal situations, we advise you do your research beforehand.
