Tired of bikinis, Pina Colada’s and beach parties? Well, then you picked the perfect time to travel and Skiing in Central Europe. Pack your ski- and snowboard-gear for some awesome weeks through the Alps’ best hotspots.

No explanation needed; the Alps are among the top things to do once travelling Europe, no matter whether you’re visiting in summer or in winter.

By mid December tons of photos are uploaded on Facebook and Twitter, announcing the first major snowfall has arrived in our area. It’s up to you whether you like these notices or not, but the message of every picture is clear – get you ski- and snowboard equipment out and prepare for the ski-lifts.

Some EFH Hostels are based next to the most exciting European mountains. Here’s an update what to do best and where when Skiing in Central Europe.

Skiing in Salzburg (Austria)

Situated on the main route between Munich and Vienna, the city is not only famous for the Sound of Music, Mozart and Red Bull. Between Christmas and March there is free snow shuttle daily that take snow-hungry backpackers to the top of the mayor ski resorts in a short bus ride up the mountain. Facts and Figures

The Alps are one of the great mountain range systems in Europe stretching approximately 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) across eight Alpine countries .

Around 70 % of Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland are alpine areas, so basically mountainous areas.

Liechtenstein – one of the smallest countries in the world (160 km2, 100 mi2) has 32 mountains higher than 2,000m (6,500 ft).

Janica & Ivica Kostelic from Zagreb (CRO) are the most successful siblings of our time in terms of ski racing and won 17 medals together on either WC or OG.

The Austrian Renate Goetschl won the ski races of Cortina d’Ampezzo (ITA) 10 times between 1999 and 2007.

The cities of Salzburg (AUT), and Munich (GER) applied to host the Olympic Games between 2006 and 2018 but failed in the final elections.

Skiing in Bad Gastein (Austria)

Situated just a 2 hours train ride south of Salzburg, the valley is a highlighted stop for every backpacker’s journey through Europe. The Euro Youth Hotel has probably the best location ever in terms of wintersports. Situated directly next to the thermal baths, only 2 minutes away from the train station, the ski lift directly in front of you once crossing the main road and famous bars such as Haeggblums just 5 minutes down the road…seriously check out this place, You won’t regret it.

Skiing in Matten/Interlaken (Switzerland)

Interlaken is situated in between Lake Thun e Lake Brienz and has one of Europe’s most unique travel options to go skiing. Just jump on the train directly in the heart of town and travel up directly on 2,000 m (6,500 ft) having famous Mt.s Eiger, Jungfrau and Moench directly in front of you. Party hard at the Balmers hostel’s nightclub Metro afterwards, but make sure you’re still fresh for the slopes the next day!

In general – there are plenty of options to go skiing within Europe, not just Austria and Switzerland. Why not travelling to Munich (Garmisch Patenkirchen, 1,5 hrs), Vienna/Bratislava (1,5 hrs to Semmering), Zagreb (Medvednica, just north of the city) and some many more.

Notice: Never complain about how cold it is in our area and ask where to go skiing in the same conversation! This simply doesn’t make sense! Don’t complain about the heating in your room while having your windows open…!
